I've never been a fan of SNL, but an avid fan of Monty Python. Why do you suppose that is? I think that the Brits carry off "silly" because it's so unexpected in them. Them seem too proper and stuffy to be silly and then they surprise you. Cary Grant was a master of physical comedy. Who would expect him to stoop to low brow humor when he was so handsome and dapper? Americans being silly are just, well, American...
