In my 10 years in uniform I seen a number of soldiers come and go. One thing I noticed is that some of the BEST I came across did t have a degree or so much as an associates. To me, the best leadership comes from the School of Hard Knocks and not a school such as UNC, UVA, UK etc....

SGT

The school of hard knocks provides great instruction at the user level. Officers, even brand new Platoon Leaders, have to think more strategically, in terms of the big picture. I think the overall experience and education you receive while pursuing a degree does make you a better person, not in the sense of better than others, but better than you were before you started the path to your degree.

At the end of the day we need both types of leaders, and more importantly we need leaders with both types of educations.
There are a lot of ways to gain experience and develop character. It comes down to the individual, not their resume'. I will, however, always encourage a soldier to always seek out more education. A background in Hard Knocks with a degree from UNC sounds like a dangerous combination to me.

Too many 'always' in that sentence. Just skip one of them. It'll read better.

By Hard Knocks I mean employing common sense versus relying strictly on whats in black and white...thats what makes you a great leader

Very true, SGT Jones. Plans are great until the first round is fired. After that, experience and good judgment are crucial to achieving the best results.

A degree is just another tool in your Leadership tool bag. If you're a poor leader, then having a degree doesn't help.

If you're a good leader, having a degree will give you more knowledge that you can use to be even a better leader.

It is not only required to move up the ranks but it makes for better leaders
