Ideas for sergeants time training other than the basic soldiers skills? Would a ruck march around post to see historical sites or learn unit history be a good idea?

I would try to get into the technical side of the military. A lot of soldiers don't understand just how the army runs on paperwork and they are crippled in that area when they get promoted to a rank or put in a position that may require paperwork. Setting aside a little time one day a week to review how counselings work and how to write them, proper bullet for NCOERS, how to properly utilize a DA200, so on and so forth, not only prepares them for the military process later on but also gives them a slight leg up for when they go to attend schools like WLC (or whatever the hell they are calling it now).

Joseph, I think you hit this one on the head more than you realize... As NCO’s, we often hold those back whom are formatable leaders and can do greater strides elsewhere! The WOCC, OCS, Green to Gold, ROTC and also to remain as an NCO achieving ones Star that way. Too often NCOs want to hold back those that can do better Good elsewhere vice the greater good for the team! Open their eyes to the broad spectrum... What are all of their options out there? Don’t leave it up to the career counselors, be the knowledgeable NCO and Leader that your Creed expects you to be! Get them 100% in their promotable status prior to the boards so once they pin 5, they know their options... Afford them the time to succeed in College for both those promotion points and time after service if they are medically retired like I was and had nothing... Don’t wait, get them prepared for the inevitable! All the best Brothers and Sisters! My prayers to those still active, reserve and drilling! Peace, Jim

Of course, especially if it includes vignettes which the Soldiers lead at each site.

Another great plan for SGT’s time training is the critical task list for each MOS as well as the supporting individual and collective tasks for the unit’s METL.

Try to lay on the call fire theater. Most lot troops have no concept on how to call for direct
Arty. Just a little familiarization goes a long way.

Second that. Did that as private with our fist team and it was a super fun experience.
