The New York Times lead editorial today urged passage of legislation championed by Sen Kirsten Gillibrand that would move serial assault cases from current "Chain of Command" to independent military prosecutors.
Sen Gillibrand's bill is called, The Military Justice Improvement and Increasing Prevention Act has 66 cosponsors. Sen. Jack Reed and Sen. Jim Inhofe on the Senate Armed Services Committee are described as having reservations.
The editorial cites that a DOD report presented that 20,500 military members were sexually assaulted that year, 13,000 of whom were women. Also presented was the murder last April at Fort Hood of Specialist Vanessa Guillen last April.
Aspects of this bill could be added to the Defense Authorization Bill this fall.
Any perspective on this?

One of my top priorities for IAVA. To ask Congress to pass it, use this link: https://iava.org/take-action/?vvsrc=%2fcampaigns%2f75731%2frespond
IAVA cannot do our work without your help. Please let your representatives know how important these issues are to you and to the veteran community.

Ken Kraetzer I've watched some of this play out. Sen Kirsten Gillibrand & others believe there has been too much "sweeping under the rug" (my words... not hers) which has allowed too many offenders escape punishment for their assaults. Those offended... both men & women... were put through an event in their lifetime that may have effective a host of problems in their lives. It's a real problem... we'll see how it ends up.
