Any interesting military holiday stories? Did something cool or crazy occur when you were on duty or on leave or at basic on a holiday?

As for my only story in this regard: We were kept so locked down during OSUT (Army Infantry basic training), that it was as if the heavens opened up and bestowed upon us lowly trainees it’s bounty on Thanksgiving! We got to sleep in (a bit), had no scheduled training--other than PT--we were allowed to watch movies, make a two minute phone call to loved ones back home (My wife of course left her phone's ringer turned off. Thanks doll!), and we ate our fill of the Thanksgiving meal served by our chain-of-command wearing their finest. May not seem like much, but it was memorable.

So as I like reading other people epic experiences, whatcha got to share?

SGT Dave Tracy On Christmas night, 1969, I was a Radio Operator in a two jeep Rat Patrol that would randomly patrol the roads to try and keep the VC from planting mines. We were amazed to see red and green flares shooting up from Cau Ha Combat Base, our Battalion base. The next morning, our battalion was read the riot act, that this was not acceptable behavior, and punishment would be severe. On New Years eve, I was again part of the Rat Patrol, and again, red and green flares were being shot into the sky.

Standing topside watch on a submarine in Hawaii in 1958, a call comes in to the topside phone. My standard Christmas greeting, "USS Bluegill, Merry Christmas." Answer from the caller, one of our WWII boat sailor's wife, "Merry Christmas, your ass, send someone over to my house and pick up this drunk little bastard." We did as instructed.

I spent Christmas Eve 1989 in Panama digging a fighting position for a reported upcoming attack of the Noriega disciples remaining from the Panama Defense force. I spent Christmas Morning in that same hole and or moving to the others in the perimeter for an attack that never came.

All that hard work, and for what? Noriega's minions to not drop by for Christmas?! How rude of them!
