Should the USAF begin a NEO of civilian families from Incirlik AFB in Turkey?

Recently, there have been a string of suicide bombings at cities nearby the Turkish AFB and we have been there since 1955. American families live on base and non-combat evacuation operation (NEO) is appropriate at this time. It would be a good idea to allow more USAF personnel from additional A-10 squadrons and other special ops units from NATO nations to set up a logistics forward base there.

Yes...once you're on base lock-down with no foreseeable timeline to open it back up, there's no reason to keep families there at risk. Turkey has changed since 2001, the last time I was there. Even then, the movement toward Islamism and away from a multicultural society had begun to take root. I no longer see it as the country of Ataturk's vision, with a leg in the East but reaching to the West. I no longer trust the Turkish military to defend Incirlik or the Americans there.

my thoughts as well. Turkey is shutting down the media that disagrees with it. Good luck for the sick man of Europe to be accepted to the EU.

It was a remote assignment when I used to visit while in USAFE in the early 1970s. It is really hard to believe that the USAF opened it to families. It's where it is for a reason.

SFC William Farrell - I am sorry, I can't give you my A-10 LOL. This A-10 picture was taken when I was with the IDARNG in 2004-2005. I just got my body Armor as an ARNG getting the wrong color scheme for OIF before we got our full issue of DCUs later. An A-10 pilot I met at an Officer's call a few days before let me go to the flightline with him to check out his plane. I Love the A-10. Who knows if this plane is still in one piece, shot down, mothballed at DM, AFB or still flying.

Did you ever get to fly in it LTC (Join to see)? I would have loved that opportunity. I flew a lot of choppers in Nam and would have loved to have gone up in a Cobra.

SFC William Farrell - Look, SFC LOL ...the days of pulling stuff off like are gone! I heard in your day the ARNG drank beer in their tanks. We had one beer per solider before our deployment and the CSM was the one with the spigot from the KEG. I did fly on a chinook in Iraq at night from BALAD to a Fob called Warhorse and just before landing the automatic flare system on board went off due to it detecting a fire or a heat source and mistaking it for an RPG and it scared the shit out of me..I did fly in a blackhawk during my OCS 2 week final A.t. at Fort Lewis. It was a vietnam style air insertion. No luck getting an A-10 ride but I did see them in action over fort polk JRTC during our final exercise there before we went on leave then down range...this video is new and I don't remember them firing the 30mm gun...

Was there from '11-'13. The army and a few of our NATO brethren have already set up shop there. They threatened us with NEO evacs but never went through with it. The steps that they are taking now with not allowing it to be an accompanied tour has taken care of the dependents safety. Families have the option of leaving if they want to on the AF's dime, but return on their own (which I think they have changed to not able to return at all). Most families should be home or in Ramstein at this moment heading home. The relationship we have and the primary mission at there makes it so that there is no active flying mission there (Google Araxos, Greece and USAF during the Spring of 2001). They are scared of a reoccurrence of this.

thanks for the information. I am glad the families, for the most part, are in safer locations within NATO.
