Can an individual who is assigned to the 82nd airborne division who is NOT a 11B wear the Combat Infantry Badge (CIB)?

A friend of mine told me medics engineers and various other MOS's were authorized to wear the badge simply because they were assigned to 82nd performing infantry duties. My buddy was field artillery (13B 1P). I strongly disagree with this because I read the regulation ( AR 600-8-22 section II 8-6) that clearly states you must be an infantryman (MOS 11B)

AR 600-8-22 Ch. 8-6b(3):
(3) Personnel with other than an infantry or SF MOS are not eligible, regardless of the circumstances. The infantry or SF SSI or MOS does not necessarily have to be the Soldier’s primary specialty, as long as the Soldier has been properly trained in infantry or SF tactics, possesses the appropriate skill code, and is serving in that specialty when engaged in active ground combat as described above. Commanders are not authorized to make any exceptions to this policy.
So, no, orders or not, the reg is the reg. Anyone other than those possessing the qualifications in the regulation CANNOT rightfully claim or wear the CIB.

It seems to read pretty clearly that if your primary MOS is lets say, 92Y, but you hold 11B as a secondary MOS and earned the cib WHILE an 11B, you can wear it.

This old, AG officer agrees with you. It is clearly spelled out in the reg that you have to hold either primary or secondary infantry or SF and be in an infantry or SF billet, O-6 (Brigade level) or below. The cooks, medics, mechanics and even old public affairs officers, do not qualify for the CIB. There are other badges they may qualify for, such as the CMB or the CAB. I will also say, I don't see a need to change the regulation either.

Wearing something that you are not authorized to wear will get you in pretty deep trouble. His odds of getting away with it are something close to nothing in the 82d. They are pretty particular about their fourages, unit citations, and other baubles unique to that storied division. NCOs are always on the lookout for stuff like this.

MSG Johnathan Mathes - , yep, in those days it was pretty standard for ring bangers to get detailed to a combat arms branch for a couple of years and then go to their CS or CSS branch to finish their careers.

Your friend is mis-informed. If they were 11/18 series MOS prior to becoming a Medic or Engineer, etc., and they earned the CIB, then yes they can wear it while being in another MOS. But that is pretty much it.

SGT Marc Shepherd I knew a bunch of 12Bs in the 70s that got the CIB in Vietnam as 11Bs, and then re-enlisted as 12Bs. They all wore them. Once it's awarded, it's yours. Now if you jump to a different branch, then things like the CIB get removed.

CPT David Geasland - Many exceptions, all MACV team members that met combat requirements regardless of MOS. That a fav spot for ADA officers that were not in the HAWK BN at LBJ.
