Media bias is the bias or perceived bias of journalists and news producers within the mass media in the selection of events and stories that are reported and how they are covered.

The media is simply a bunch of for-profit businesses doing what is best for their bottom line (and therefore, their investors).

I find it interesting how many of the same people who tout the benefits of a free market, capitalist system will simultaneously rail against the media by calling them biased. They chase the stories that society finds interesting, so their "bias" is simply a reflection of society's leanings. People can't have it both ways. You can't expect the media to play nice and be unbiased, while also expecting them to exist in a competitive, market-based environment. That "bias" is nothing more than a source of differentiation in order to appeal to different segments of the marketplace. If people look close enough, they'll find media outlets (broadcast, radio, internet, etc.) that cover the entire political spectrum. In aggregate, I think it's a wash between left-leaning and right-leaning media outlets.

SSgt W. Aaron Gregory - I'm not advocating state-run media. That brings up a whole different set of problems. Given today's disdain for the Federal government by many of those on the political right, I only see a state-run media having even less legitimacy. I think the answer is to simply acknowledge that the media is simply a bunch of businesses trying to carve out their own segment of the market, and we need to pick those outlets that best serve our interests. Over time, the market will sort itself out.

SSgt W. Aaron Gregory - And, regarding the stakeholder comment, our society has shown that whenever a conflict exists between shareholder interests and the broader interests of all stakeholders, the shareholders win almost every time.

LTC Kevin B. - Of course not.. I do not mean to suggest as much. But in our current scenario, those are the choices that we have. Your proposed answer is about all we can do... and I hope you are right in that it sorts itself out. Ideally, sooner rather than later!

SFC Stephen King ,
I choose not to subscribe to the bias perspectives of any of the news outlets (Fox, CNN, MSNBC, Local news), as I simply choose to not watch the news at all. Instead, I choose to start and end my day with the Bloomberg Business channel, as I get the opportunity to monitor the global market platform. Unfortunately many civil unrest is derived from the financial posture of countries as they move forward, coupled with the poor decision making of individuals. Great thought provoking question!

This is an excellent means of understanding what is truly going on. Kudos to you for your insight. As I tell all of my friends on LinkedIn ~ business and money are often intimate bedfellows with the worldwide and national geopolitical landscape.
