Why do so many people use their military photos as profile pictures?

I'm Pretty new to the site, but I'm kind of weirded out by all of the military profile photos. I mean we all had to be verify the veterans or current service members to be on this site, and we all live together eat together deploy together go to the field together and see each other all the time on base in uniform. it would just seem to me that people would want to show who they are outside of the military. So why do you show your military uniform instead of who you are outside of the uniform? I'm just wondering.

You would not guess she was in the military if you saw her.

Good one, ma'am.
When I first joined the site the big thread was about "proper" photos, after that many people put up their service photos. There is nothing wrong with civilian photos but I see that you are a SPC, so you may not be aware that the more rank you gain the less interesting you become and the more you want to be boring and wear your dress uniform in online photos. (just FYI)
Also, When else do I get to show off this cool rack?

After 18 years of EO training I don't think I can bring myself to give you a specific invitation to look at my rack. It's right there in my photo. I've had a long career that has put me in many uneventful places for long periods of time where occasionally things happened and I now have 18 or so colored bits of ribbon to show for it. I loved and hated every other minute of it.
