30 day annual training

So here's a little backgroud. I have a civlian staff member who is also a reserve soldier.  His unit has planned a 30 day AT this year, in addtion 10 of 12 drills being MUTA 5 or 6s.   I have not been in the reserves for years, and a 30 day AT is new to me.  Has anyone else seen something simliar?

Although they are not the norm. 30 day ATs do happen. Usually around a significant training event such as a JRTC/ NTC rotation or as an instructor my ATs were 6 weeks every year a week to prep teach the 4 week class and a week to close up.

I have been in the guard for 3 years and I've never heard of that. I have had a couple MUTA 5 and 6 but never anything that lasted longer than 3 weeks.

Our AT was 21 days, which is becoming more common from what I've been hearing. 30 days sounds a bit much?

And Reservists are only authorized 48 MUTA (Military Training Unit Assemblies, aka "drill") per FY. Each drill counts as 4, 2 per day of duty. How a unit decides to get to 48 is up to the commmander, but you cannot exceed 48, if you do there may not be funding to pay your Soldiers. And it may be illegal, since Reservists are only authorized 48.

Have you tried talking to his unit to verify that info?

Not the norm but possible. I have had two rotations to the southern border that were at least three weeks (travel time, train up & 2 weeks on station) and our current rotation to NTC is almost 30 days (with a MUTA 1 on either end for travel/recovery). This iteration has brought with it MUTA 6's, a MUTA 8 & a MUTA 10.

Ive done many years of extra drill but its usually voluntary. If we have a MUTA 6 (3 day drill) its offset my a MUYA 2 (1 day drill) Ive never seen where more was required for the whole unit except for deployments or pre-deployment training. Maybe its a hi priority unit that gets extra money.

I know there's a program called IMA individual mobilization augmentee. A form of army reservist that basically reports directly to an active duty unit. In those cases they can show up and do all 30 days of their ATM drill weekends at one time. My civilian boss is army reservist and works for FEMA. He also could do that if he wanted. It is possible but definitely outside of the norm

Yes, 48 is the max UTAs. And no more than 35% of them in a 3-month period or 20% in 1-month. (%'s can be deviated w/ MUSARC Commander permission). This includes RST/ESTs. However, so long as funding is available, then can exceed the 48 by using ATA or RMAs.

AT can be at least 14 (ARNG) or 15 (USAR) days but not more than 30.

I was in 1974 to 1996. No 30 day annual training that I can remember. State probably didn't want to foot the bill for that.
I'd like to see a thirty day AT every couple of years. Sometimes two weeks just isn't enough time to accomplish anything except setting up and tearing down. Especially Spec Ops units that go overseas or that have intensive training requirements that would benefit from more than 2 weeks training.

Yes. They take two FYs ATs and merge them together for a CTC rotation. That may explain the heavy MUTA schedule. They only get to go may be once every 5 years or so.

I saw this with a ARNG BCT I advised in Either AR or OK. My brother in laws reserve unit also did this at JRTC.
