I used to be with 5-7 ADA I been 13 yrs in the ARMY and is the best assignment so far. Baumholder is really small there is almost anything to do but you will be really close to other countries it's all about the travel. Take advantage of it.

Could you suggest any outlining cities/towns to live in within reasonable driving distance to Baumholder?

1SG (Join to see) - Trier Germany, it's awesome, has old Roman ruins there, plus it's a very festive city. Also Luxembourg is close, Pattons grave, the place where they treat Americans real good is Bastogne Belgium also. Metz France is pretty close, and pretty, take advantage of the travel, if you stay in Baumholder you won't get the whole 'European' aspect, Baumholder is "Americanized", if your single, stay away from the women in Baumholder, there like 4-8 of em, and they have dated every Joe on post....

Start studying German now. The batter you are able to understand conversational German, the more opportunity you will have to enjoy traveling (in you off time) to see Germany and the rest of Europe.
Have you been stationed OCONUS before (not deployed) and are you taking a family with you?
Knowing this will allow for more detailed advice.

I was stationed in Korea in 05 unaccompanied but this time me and my wife will be in Europe. Could you recommend a travel agency to get to and from countries or even back to the states? I have heard by word of mouth about SATO Europe but have not found anything on it. Also I understand the OHA rates but is there limited housing availability on/off post?

1SG (Join to see) , Things may have changed since my day, but the military travel office on your base should arrange for you and your household goods to be shipped, but I am not sure how they will handle the travel for your family. I know that it used to take a couple of weeks to get assigned housing on Baumholder, so you might need to wait instead of all going at once. You might be able to contact the Base Operator: 011-49-711-680-113 or DSN [login to see] . They can either connect you to or give you the number of other offices on base.
The number to the Housing Division may have changed but was: Phone 011-49-6783-66137 / 011-49-6783-67585 or (DSN) [login to see] . If it were me, I would take the on base housing because it is closer to the amenities on base, but there are some really nice places out on the economy if thy offer you a CNA (certificate of non-availability).
It has been a really long time since I was stationed in Baumholder, but the SATO travel office was on Texas Avenue back when; and one of the nice things that they did was weekend bus tours. Even if SATO is not still there, I am sure there will be something similar. I took several of the bus tours to see sights because they rolled transportation, accommodations and venue access all into one package. I also drove myself to Calais, France in my POV and took the ferry over to Dover for a self guided (mostly walking) tour of London and that was a real blast because I got to see things that the bus tour didn't go to.
Being stationed in Baumholder is (in my opinion) a pretty fantastic opportunity because you are driving distance to so many countries that you can see most of Europe during a 3 year rotation. I wish that it were possible for me to go back and do it again.
You can do a pretty nice recon of the base through Google Maps. It is not a large base although it does have a nearby German base and many local training exercises were conducted using the German ranges. Google has a good satellite shot that has many of the on base amenities marked, like the PX, but it does not show where the commissary or any of the units are.
There were (when I was there) many trips to Grafenwöhr, Germany for gunnery training and Hoenfels, Germany for maneuver training.
This has gotten quite long, but if you have questions, I will try to help.

May help to study for the USAEUR drivers license, you have to have it before you can pick up your vehicle. Don't sweat a place to stay if you are bringing family, they will take care of that.
