I agree with the USAREUR Commander's direct method in addressing the threat and being public - early and like the fact that he said "They don't want a military confrontation with NATO" publicly, and he means it. What do you think, is he showing his hand, or is the move and statements spot on? I think he is spot on by letting his action speak! I strong defense is the surest way to peace.

Russia (USSR and today) like China, are paper tigers, and all about saber rattling. Russia wants so badly to be a player on the world stage, and that ship has sailed...

My concern, however CSM Michael J. Uhlig is NATO... The NATO mantra is "an attack against one, is an attack against all", but on 12 Sep 2001, that did not seem to be the case...

I think what he said is pie in sky. The reality is Russia moved on the Crimean Peninsula and NATO dithered. They are active in the rest of the Ukraine and we send blankets. China is watching and measuring. They want Taiwan and at some point, our weakness with Russia and the middle east will embolden them to act. I like the strong comments but we talk a lot these days and are unwilling to back it up.

China is building a fleet and has a lot of money to spend. They are stealing secrets and copying technology. Will it go anywhere? Hard to say for sure. We have supposedly made a "pivot" to the Pacific due to the concerns we have.

COL Charles Williams - I disagree that Russia is a paper tiger. They have the real capabilities to be a world power, as Vladimir Putin has done excellent work at rebuilding their status on the world stage. China......they're effective, but lacking with much of the military technology.

However, I distinctly agree that NATO is not an ally that will stand. For one thing, NATO showed it's colors in 2001 (and the years since). Our few DEDICATED allies have helped, but otherwise a lot of our NATO "allies" simply sent people to fill the non-combat roles to free our Soldiers up to get shot at. Secondly, Russia has them by the balls with the Ukrainian pipeline. The ability to shut off oil/fuel coming from inside the rich Russian oil fields into Europe has proven effective in making the NATO countries collapse in the past.

I don't think that they have it in them for the fight.....especially since the Russians have managed to rebuild pieces of their military into effective technologies.

Although I'm getting really pissed off with the United States being the forefront of every military action, with Great Britain in close association. Let's get some of the Germans.....some of the Italians.....some of these other nations step in and provide COMBAT TROOPS, not just fobbits to free up our own Soldiers to get shot at.

Hooah.... CPT (Join to see). I remember the cold war, and what the USSR said they could do... and could actually do, were vastly different. I don't think things have gotten any better... I just think they have more media coverage.

Being direct is the only way in my mind. Russia has no problem issuing direct threats, and now is not the time to be wishy washy with them. Surely Putin knows that he can't match the full force of Nato war power...heck, I don't think he would last long against the US, but I think Putin would tell you different. Time to stand up and play hard ball. I think LTG Hodges got it right.

I have no doubt the real military men of NATO, including but not limited to US soldiers, would be more than a match for Russia's military. And inwardly, the Russians know that we can more than adequately savage them in battle. But, few countries have taken on the Russians and not come out bloodied. Only the Mongols and for a brief time the Nazis have successfully taken and held territory in Russia. This historical fact counts for a lot too and is not lost with NATO.

I will say this though, when Russians commit to a fight, they commit to a fight. When the Russian Army moves, its under one national command. An American division can probably take on 2 or even 3 Russian divisions adequately, but within the context of NATO, we will be much slower to act. We need to understand this. If all these NATO allies had the same unifying vigor as one unit, Putin would realize he's bitten off more than he can chew, but when he sees the American military downsizing and leaving Afghanistan, the British military on the down and out at a record pace, the French are still fair weather fans at best and traitors at worst, the Germans have lost their militarism a long time ago, and these tiny little European statelets with utterly nothing militarily on the table, he knows that NATO countries at any one time are busy squabbling amongst themselves and wondering who will pick up the tab.

SPC Angel Guma, when are we going to get you signed to an ROTC Green-To-Gold Scholarship or your OCS packet completed for submission? I would gladly endorse either one for you.
