Is it bad if a Unit Commander sponsors an enlisted soldier at a soldier of the month/promotion board?

Irregular. Certainly unorthodox. Bad? No. Well, not bad for the Soldier nor the Soldier's Commander. However....the 1SG and the Soldier's NCO Leadership are probably going to have a conversation. That is, unless the Commander was so strong felt that the Soldier is so damn high speed that the Commander WANTED to sponsor the Soldier.

Define sponsorship. It's his job to recognize achievement and he relies on his leaders to ensure it happens. I never experienced a CO actually sitting on a Board - rather a cast of O/SNCOs. Only exception was WO screening board, with CO, all Company Cmdrs, Adjutant and SgtMaj.

If CO truly sees Merit, he has a few hip pocket Meritorious promotions. They are allocated and at his disposal. I've seen young Marines promoted on the spot by GOs, even Commanders. Because they can. That is total sponsorship.

I can only see great things from that. The Commander taking time out of his/her super busy schedule to sponsor the Soldier. That speaks very highly.
I mean the CSM may have some questions as to why an NCO isn't, but that's the NCOs problem. The sponsored Soldier should be fine.

The CSM might ask the 1SG why an NCO isn’t handling it but that won’t reflect on the soldier.
