Or 68r which I find very interesting and could lead to a better future but I’d enlist as e3 with my college credits. Any constructive advice would be appreciated. 68w or 68r?? Which would be better for the future? 2021-03-18T15:05:24-04:00 Kacey Witter 6834013

Going to meps soon but I’m a bit confused about which MOS to Pick. 68w, I’m already Emt certified so I’d enlist as an e4 under the acasp*** program. Are you going AD or reserves? You can always try to reclass after your first contract too. I’m getting ready to go to my third career school. You need a bachelor's degree, to be an E4. In my opinion (probably biased) I would go with 68R. But there is a plethora of reasons and also caveats, it's all about what you want, really. There is no other job in the 68 field that I'd rather do. I'm in field hospital so we have pretty much everyone there 68C, 68D, 68J etc. Ultimately it's you're life and you'll have to make the decision yourself, so in the end just pick the MOS which is best for you. Hard and good times are guaranteed especially in the active side. I do know that 68R is rarely offered as anything that deals with animals in the military is in high demand. You're just as a 68R will be very specific so the day to day activities will be the same. As a Medic, you could be with a Combat line company, working in a hospital ER department in Hawaii or Germany, at a field hospital, as medic coverage for training school, pulling sick call every morning for your company etc. So if you like an ever changing field 68W is something to look at. If you join as a 68W and already have some of your nursing pre-reqs, work hard for two years and then look at the AECP. It is a commissioning program where the Army pays for the last two years of nursing school, pays you Active Duty pay during those two years, and then you get commissioned as an Army Nurse. *Source of info- AD 68W for over 9 years
If I picked an MOS just based on job skills, I'd pick 68P (you can get your MRI and CT classes covered which is an excellent skill as a civilian), or 68C to work on nursing skills to get an LPN to BSN. If you did LPN to BSN, you can then apply for direct commission as an Army officer. Choices are endless, hope that helps! Being a W will give you experience working with people and being a R will give you experience working with animals... at least on paper. Half the (very few) R’s I know spent no time with live animals all their time inspecting dead animals and the things that contained them.

I know a select few R’s who went on to lucrative careers after retiring as MSG’s and working as executives in corporations. Like every other non-mechanical, non-commo MOS, your job only translates to low level work or prepares you to be a mid level manager. You’ll most likely need to grab an extra level of education outside the military for you to use your experience toward a decent paying career.
