Companies have been well aware for a while that their employees are exhausted from working in the pandemic (although, admittedly, some show more concern for the issue than others). These pop-up holidays have mostly entered the picture as a response to that burnout, often spurred by responses to company-wide wellness surveys, like the one Turbyville answered.

Those who worked at home often found themselves working hours well beyond what they would have in the office...

I hear you ma’am. Maybe that is the case for some, it wasn’t for my section that I supervised. They may have put in done early or late hours, but that was because they were doing personnal stuff during their normal working hours. I got about 50% of the production I should have out of them because of slow internet coordination we needed to do and not being able to collaborate immediately with one another; why? Because they were doing their own things during normal business hours. I am so glad I was able to retire in January, I was just too tired of making it work all the time.
