Any recommendations for hearing protection for Infantry?

Are most just using issued protection? Thinking of a Christmas present.

The best ear pro you can buy your beloved Infantryman is a set of Peltors. They can range anywhere from $100 to $900 for the fancy ones that can hook into com systems with a mic. You can find some older used Comstat models for a decent price or the Sport models are between $100-$200. Ideally get a pair that have the Active microphone that allows you to hear someone speaking but block sound when there is shooting. Most of them will fit under the helmet and most units won't have an issue with the Soldier wearing them. They're perfect for Range Safety duties because you aren't deaf. If you look around there are much cheaper versions available as well, you could probably find a good set at Cabella's for under $100

This sounds good but in a combat situation I want to hear a twig snap.and I doubt that these would hold up in a dirty sweaty jungle. I was a grunt in 1970 in Vietnam and carried a M60. Now I am an old man with hearing aids. I don't see how that can be avoided in an 11 series mos. but I'm glad that someone is trying.

SPC Lyle Montgomery they actually hold up great and are used extensively throughout special operations because the microphone can enhance the quietest sounds and still block out the loud noises. But combat is no longer quiet, it's loud armored trucks in cities, heavy equipment against near peer threats, and people wearing 50 pounds of body armor kicking in doors

Tricky- never used them in combat, needed to be able to hear everything as a grunt. too much and you can die, don't block enough and you are deaf. Plus if it is not DOD approved, they may not let them wear them

Thank you. I was think more for just on the range - my son and I use noise canceling over the ear protection at our range but I know many use in the ear protection.

Unfortunately, that's me. I don't think anyone serving in the Infantry, Armor, Artillery, or Combat Engineers in the 80's or 90s came out without some hearing loss if you spent any amount of time around it. They should have just issued you a VA rating with your DD214 or NGB22.

Yeah, I remember they gave us thoes rubber earplugs in the little green plastic case with a black keychain, I think I still have mine here somewhere. I got discharged in 1990, 11B 7ID
