What to do about late or never awarded deployment awards?

I know there are people who are award seekers, the CAB lurkers etc., but what about going on a deployment for 9 months and never receiving a deployment award at all. At what point do you give up trying to get an award?

Exactly what is a "Deployment Award"?
If it was your unit's policy to recognize all deployed personnel with an "end of tour" award or something, and you did not receive one, I would contact the unit and inquire about it. If not everyone got an award, I would inquire about the reason I did not get one (if I felt it was deserved) to my immediate supervisor and, then, up the chain of command, as appropriate.

I've been on 4 deployments and only got certificates of commendation for 2 of them. Not everyone gets one everytime. I'm sure you feel like you deserve one, I certainly did for my last deployment but sometimes it's a timing thing.

It's a rather complex situation for my deployment. I was Army attached to Airforce, and Airforce takes very good care of their airmen. They get an Air medal for every 20 sorties, however Army gives AM for 6 months or more of flying, plus other things. The Air Force wrote our awards, and they have been signed by an O-6. However, the Army doesn't recognize it and the unit pushed it up to get it signed by an O-8. This was back in April, and now I have left the unit. I am worried about being competitive for promotion, I did something outside my MOS for over a year, but nothing to show for it. Army gives out awards like candy.

I completely understand wanting recognition, especially when it is outside you MOS over an extended period of time. Have you tried to see if they can give you the summary of action and proposed citation and have your chain of command run it up for you?

The last I heard was it was at INSCOM CG for approval and to hear back about it by April 14th.
I didn't know there was a "Deployment Award"! If you are asking about a specific (Achievement, Commendation, Meritorious Service, etc) award, I know that not everyone gets one every time - I never believed in that idea myself. (I know it has happened) If you think you deserve one, I would DEFINITELY talk to my supervisor about that!

Read some of your replies to other responses and if you know "the Air Force" wrote your awards, then I'm certain that whomever wrote them for you would want to know you didn't get it - they probably don't know and I would contact them - they should be able to follow up and get it thru the system. (I did several for "Army" guys while I was deployed as well, but I made sure they got them!)

While I am not big on "everybody gets an award", I certainly fully support recognizing personal achievement. I would try to locate my old chain of command and inquire about it. You should be able to find/contact them, if they are still in, through the military e-mail system.
