The number one thing that we can do as a military community is the same that non-military communities can do - stay engaged after all the initial expressions of comfort subside.
The overwhelming grief that is experienced doesn't go away in a convenient timeframe. After the days, weeks and even possibly months from the loss of their loved one pass by, many will drift off into their own lives and will occasionally give a passing thought to the tragedy someone else experienced.
Maintain the connection and watch out for difficult times they will experience. This will help a lot more than giving them a parking spot at the PX/Commissary or a free dinner at a restaurant (not that those aren't appreciated .. but staying engaged would help so much more).

Well said Colonel! The Gold Star parents that I know simply want their child to not be forgotten. Maintaining contact is the key and this can be done by inviting them to events, checking in on them, seeing if they need anything, etc....

I think Gold Star Mother's need something special, that they can utilize personally. Such as getting a free 1 hour massage session. I have never heard of " anyone" complaining of
getting a massage, and my wife insists that I should get one. That in itself is something that I believe Gold Star Mothers would appreciate a special gift.

COL, you and I agree on a number of things, but where we majorly differ is on timeline. To the other respondents, read my post and tell me that a 1 hour massage (Kenneth Bachmeier) is equilivant to loosing a son or daughter. Do you people even understand what a Gold Star family is. My guess is you have no idea since the War ended 18 or so months ago depending on the country.
