I volunteer at my son's school and pass out Army pencils. I encourage them to go the extra mile. I share with the students how I joined the military at 17, and how it shaped my life.

Most of what I do now since I am no longer in is talk to students who may be interested in entering the military. I also work with youth who are addicted to various drugs, I have been where they are and that by joining the Army I turned my life around and made a positive out of the mess my life had been. My influence may be limited on them but I can say that I represent the core values I learned while in the military to my grandchildren. And hope that someday they will follow in my footsteps. I have one granddaughter who is soon to join the Air Force, hopefully the first of many.

That is awesome, I am big on paying forward! The power of encouragement and having another person believe in you!

Very honorable! Nice to hear that others take the good stuff with them when they leave the uniform behind.

I do the best I can with what I have been given. If I can reach just 1 person in 10 I feel that I have been successful. I have had several of the addicted teens as well as the students contact me to see how I am and keep me up to date on how they are doing. A couple have even joined the service. I must be saying something right.

Though I can't lead adult (and I use the term loosely)troops anymore I've turned my attention to Boy Scouts of America, I serve as a den leader, troop committee member, merit badge counselor, camp master and range master. Ran every range in uniform from pistol, to rifle to 203, but had to take a Boy Scout approved range master course. Guess BBs are much more dangerous than I thought! :-)

'Zactly! I see too many children and families "lost", no moral compass, no direction in a world & country that, point blank, is brutal and harsh especially for those lacking resources. If you can point even one child/family towards true north, I feel you've made a difference.

MAJ Petrarca:

Zacttly Sir, God is using you to be a moral combat force multiplier.

I came in the Military at 1984 at 17, and I had people like you that directed me and guided me.

Blessings to you!!

CDR of the Local VFW and a Poppy Peddling Fool. Great way to meet and greet and swap sea stories with Fellow Vets outside Hy Vee Grocery Store.
