I would tell my family and friends something along those lines: "I never go outside the wire. I only work at the TMC which is pretty safe. Some of the 'bad' stuff you hear about happens in other regions of Iraq". Only after my year was over did I tell them that I was part of EVAC Platoon which went outside the wire all the time and that for the duration of one month I (and a small group of us) spent my time on a tiny JSS in the middle of Baghdad together with IA and IP. Otherwise, some people, especially my mom, would have had a heart attack back home! Communication means we're quite decent (most of the time at least), so I would tell them: "See, it's not so bad here, there are even ways to communicate with you guys back home"! After the year was over I told them a lot of what was really going on with me, but not everything. I think it's better that way.
