The training was some of the best training I received in the Army even to this day and the area down there is beautiful. I really enjoyed looking out of our barracks at Fort Sherman and seeing the Ocean daily. The food was good and Panama City was awesome. Other than that, I would live anywhere in Europe. Pretty much everywhere we stopped would be a great place to live (except for the local economies, lol). I've always been into Classical Archaeology (I have a degree in Anthropology) and Greek and Roman mythology, so central Italy or Greece (to include Crete) would be really cool. Sounds more like a vacation to me. As far as I'm concerned the only two places the conventional Army has "deployed" to in the past decade is Iraq and Afghanistan. Various parts of Africa might possibly count, but only arguably so as I have not heard my 1st ID brothers who are currently over there getting into any contact with enemy forces.

Considering Iraq and Afghanistan are the only two real choices, and that I've been to both, if I HAD to choose one it would be Afghanistan. I've always liked mountains and my little corner of RC-East had some pretty scenic views. This assumes I could figure out a way to live there without the local population having a burning desire to decapitate me, or otherwise kill me by some other means. Scenic vistas are nice and everything, but you kinda need a head to enjoy them. I married an Italian and I love the culture, the people and the history of this country. The lifestyle is not like in the United States. In places like Venice and Florence it is like time has slowed down and these cities have not caught up to modern time. They are as they were hundreds of years ago. In the country sides there are markets vs large super markets like there was in days gone by. The people enjoy life a little wine, pizza or pasta. Even in Vicenza you can find the markets, the wine making, the old and the modern mixed into a harmonious blend. I am sure I will retire in Italy as well as the US. 50% there and 50% in the US.
