I'm a former Army guy, current Coast Guard guy assigned to a Navy unit (for 5 years) guy. Needless to say I'm in acronym hell.

The Army had quite a few. The Coast Guard has more. However, the Navy sets the bar high. No one but no one beats the Navy for the number of acronyms that they have. They have so many that I've found quite a few Navy folks who aren't sure what they mean.

Do you think we use too many? Should they be standardized across the all the services? I see CG and I think Coast Guard but to an Army person it's Commanding General. At times it's hard to get a point across because I'm looking up what an acronym means in meetings.

It has to be a pain in joint command meetings or in the Pentagon? Do we really need that many?

What are some of the longest and most ridiculous acronyms you know of in the military?

Here are two that I know of.

DECS, which is short for:
DSCS ECCM Control Subsystem, which is short for:
Defense Satellite Communications System Electronic Counter-Counter Measure Control Sub System.
Seriously, some of the acronyms in SATCOM are killer.

And now for the NAVY:
Adcomsubordcomphibspac Which is short (seriously?) for:
Administrative Command, Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet Subordinate Command.

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
