I don't think they had a choice in that case. I assume this was the ECP and there was a need to review documentation prior to entry. The larger question should be, why did we pack everything up and leave the Afghans to fend for themselves? No residual support, no air, just a big fat "we're out, good luck, and screw you."

Indeed Major ... it was more of a retreat than a withdrawal. Even a retreat would/should have been more organized and planned. As a withdrawal, it was (OBVIOUSLY) an abysmal failure of senior leadership right up into the White House. Gen. Milley should have been prmptly relieved of command and retired at a lesser rank.

SSG Bill McCoy - I was being generous. I'm sure it certainly looked like and was described as a retreat and victory to the Taliban and our other enemies.

SSG Bill McCoy - I think the entire Joint Chiefs staff should be censured for the failure. As far as I know there was never even a review of the whole debacle.

Maj Kevin "Mac" McLaughlin - They will talk about how they sent the Americans running for their lives, with the dirty sympathizers hanging off of our airplanes. Abandoned. Left to be held accountable for their crimes.
Those images will sum up the entire time we spent there. The Taliban will forever tell stories of their great victory against the invaders and those who chose to side with them.
Shame, shame.

This is something that you don't have a choice about. I have spent two years in Iraq. You can't just make a bubble around you. Especially in this situation. It is impossible to conduct a zero risk operation in combat. The best you can do is to reduce the risk as much as you can.

If you are not trying to control an entire flood of panicked civilians who speak little English- tjen you have to view their papers and physically block or move them. The bomb that was used chewed a big enough area that even a barricaded checkpoint would have failed.
