So I am about to move for the first time from South Arkansas to Oklahoma City, OK. I was wondering if I would be able to buy guns and ammo in my new state before I can officially establish residency as I am moving in with a friend for the time being and wont have my name on a property lease or anything else to be able to establish official residency. I am pretty sure ammo wont be an issue but what concerns me is the guns. I am taking my 3 guns with me and if I decide I want to sell one to buy a new one, will I absolutely have to be an established resident is my question. A second question will follow this one in terms of swapping my state IDs out. Is it possible or am I just a wishful thinker?

You can not buy a gun until you establish residency. Federal requirements are to have a government issued document with your current physical address. Picture, name, DOB, and address I think are the minimums. Or a combination of documents that show all that. However, GOVERNMENT ISSUED. Not a cable bill, not a gas bill, not even a lease agreement.
States might require more, but those can not be used instead of. The form 4473 is pretty clear that they must be government issued documents.
Get your license showing where you live, even if it's just going to be for a couple months, and update it after you move, or just wait until you get to your newer, longer lasting location.

Before I went active duty, I was a sporting goods manager at Walmart. You can buy ammo if your old enough - even an out of state ID is okay.
To buy a firearm:
FFL (licensed retailers) will have you fill out an ATF form 4473 Application to purchase firearm. This is then submitted to the Federal approval system, & they run a background check on you. It's the federal system that gives you the approval not the state. I once had a visitor from Thailand who wanted to buy a firearm and I had him fill out the application and submitted it do the ATF approval system and they approved him! But hey oh, it was the Federal system that approved him not me! Lol

He's not military.
BUT, that's every state. It's federal law, or at least the ATF intgerpretation of hte federal law, so in their regulations that have the force of law. PCS orders and military ID establish residency and identity.
