If the enemy does set foot on our turf, I'm sure there are many americans willing to defend, civilian and military alike.

Depends if we allow ourselves to lose control of not only our liberties but also our minds. If it's war or terrorism? Maybe. Our country is pretty isolated due to the oceans. It's hard to bring war to the USA.

Think the language you've used protects you from accusations of paranoia.

"real possibility" - yes. Pretty much doesn't matter what follows, a possibility is simply our acknowledgement that we can't predict the future...

"armed conflict" - uhhh, defined as what? Armored warfare between conventional forces (that would be paranoid)? I would say pretty remote. Disgruntled "bad actors" shooting things up - we already got those. Somewhere in between? Organized OPFORs pursuing a coordinated insurgent and/or terror campaign? I would say that possibility is very much in our immediate future...5 years of less. I think our approach to Iran is the key to the timing.

"sometime soon" - again, difficult to assess given lack of specificity in "soon." Between Iran and ISIS, I think "soon" is within this decade...

If you're asking, will there be an armed insurrection by disaffected citizens against the federal government in the next 5 years...I'd say very unlikely.

In my experience, this is an exclusively "conservative" belief and one that saddens me greatly. Violence has become a favored tool for ensuring you get your way. God forbid someone employ good listening, deep soul searching and compromise instead of fear, hatred and good ol' tyranny.

If it happens, Abe Lincoln was right and democracy is a failure. If it happens, it will also rip the veil off of just how morally bankrupt today's Conservativism is. After all, how can one believe in freedom and then attempt to violently circumvent the will of the people?

Ideas must stand or fall on their own merits. If they can't stand, then it's time to either adjust the message, be a better communicator or consider that maybe the idea isn't as awesome as you think it is.

In my opinion, yes. Look around our communities. Are we as citizens able to defend? NO! As a country, we are over weight, entitled, and do not look like a people who can fight back on our soil. Hope not to offend, but many of men in our communities are too concerned with being girlfriends. Furthermore, many people are too busy trying to take from our government (Snap/welfare), but will never take arms to defend.
