There has to be something else here. Candidly, as a Commander, I never went near a soldier's personal finances unless I got dragged in to them somehow.Response by LTC Jason Mackay made Dec 13 at 2020 6:00 PM2020-12-13T18:00:10-05:002020-12-13T18:00:10-05:00SSgt Christophe Murphy6577501

I'm assuming you have a clearance level of at least Secret. Finances directly impact clearances because Service Members who can be exploited due to vulnerabilities is an issue and immediate red flag during investigations. Bad finances can result in a failed clearance investigation. Refusing to provide your financials can also do that.

Without any additional context I assume that is what you are dealing with.Response by SSgt Christophe Murphy made Dec 13 at 2020 6:05 PM2020-12-13T18:05:20-05:002020-12-13T18:05:20-05:00SFC Private RallyPoint Member6577630

This sounds like one of those good idea fairy things.

No, you are not obligated to turn over your personal expenses to any leaders in your unit; any more than you are obligated to turn over your cell phone bill, credit card statements, or internet browser history. There are times you can be ordered to surrender these things, but unless your command has a valid reason there is no legal claim to demand these things.

I guarantee what happened here is some General decided that the best way to be effective leaders is to be in your Soldiers business. I actually do agree with that, but leadership is relationships, not making intrusive and illegal demands. Your leadership is asking for this because they want to ensure you're not making bad financial decisions that they will have to deal with the repercussions of later.Response by SFC Private RallyPoint Member made Dec 13 at 2020 7:09 PM2020-12-13T19:09:13-05:002020-12-13T19:09:13-05:00SSG Private RallyPoint Member6578088

Everyone is talking about clearances.....I have a TS SCI and never had to turn over any bank information.

No, you do not have to. I suggest you talk to legal/jag and not take advice from here. If your chain of command is ordering you to hand over these type of records they have already asked a JAG officer if they are within their rights to demand them.
