Am I wrong or crazy to think that they(big business) should stop commercializing and capitalizing on Veteran's Day?

At least they are calling the public's attention to it. That's better than having it forgotten by all but the 1%.

SGT Jason Karol I don't see much commercialization in Ohio of Veteran's day, just free meals.
I can't imagine IA would be much different.
What bothers you, do you mind sharing an example?

It's like all the other holidays, whereas there are special sales. Gets me when I see a "Memorial" Day sale. Glad to see a few companies starting to buck the recent trends and close for the holiday instead. http://www.silive.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2015/11/black_friday_2015_these_stores_will_be_closed_on_thanksgiving.html
Black Friday 2015: These stores will be closed on Thanksgiving
So far, 41 stores have joined the growing list of national chains closing for the holiday.

LTC John Shaw one example would be that there are roughly over 50,000 homeless veterans in the United States. While a free meal and discounts are nice, personally I would rather see the money used for radio/tv commercials/meals/discounts better allocated to where it is really needed, housing, medical, emergency needs, etc. I don't understand why businesses have to wait till Veterans Day to honor veterans when they can do so much more than a free meal.

SGT Jason Karol - But it's not their job or responsibility. If you want to be angry, upset, or disappointed, channel it towards the government.
Rather than shaming those who don't help, we should prop up those who do. There are so many ways to support veterans that we don't necessarily see on the surface, such as hiring practices.
I was offered a job as a manager at Barnes and Noble in 2013. Why? Previous retail management/sales experience and military experience. My retail experience was from 2008 and I beat out internal candidates. My store always gave vets an interview no matter how lacking their resume or experience was, and it was common practice in our area.
My point being is that just because they offer a sale or discount doesn't mean they don't do other things. If they were bragging about it, people would complain as well.
Even though the sales may seem tacky, they still bring awareness. How many people realize when and what Veterans Day is because they heard about a sale or discount? A lot of people have engaged me in conversation about it and then it led into discussion about Memorial Day.
We're too indoctrinated into believing whatever is on the surface. How many people would tell you that WWP is an awesome Veteran organization? How many know the truth?
Take advantage of the sales and discounts, but also use it as a point of discussion if people ask. But don't condemn businesses for taking advantage of it as well.

MAJ (Join to see) - SGT Jason Karol SSG Karol, I get your point, but most companies are looking for a soft commitment, not the hard commitment of solving problems that they did not create. The VA system is supposed to care for veterans, sometimes they do great, most of the time they are an employment agency for people who say they serve veterans, but in fact, serve themselves.
CPT Lautner,
Great points, most of the time if we can get companies to consider veteran employees then we have a win.
