I spent a total of twenty years in the field starting in 1990 as a police dispatcher, then to a Patrol Deputy Sheriff in MO, to a Federal Corrections Officer, to a LEO Physical Security Specialist - finally to DHS 1810 Investigator. My Federal Law Enforcement Career was from 1994 to 2012. I miss it. How about you? After a brief stint working for an experienced attorney, I opened my own law office in March 2006 and have been preventing my former employer from breaking up families (I also help people get their green cards and US citizenship) ever since, with a 90% success rate.

I really enjoy what I do, have maintained an excellent relationship with ICE and am actually referred by them when they get people in their custody and learn that they are victims of domestic violence and child abuse by their US citizen spouses and parents.

I rarely miss it. When I retired, I was hired as an 1811 and I just retired May 28th. Total LEO time: 38 years. Do I miss it? Considering it is the only thing I have done my entire adult life, since I was 21 years old, yes I do. I sure don't miss the commute! I miss the great people I worked with for the past several years and our mission. I really believed I made a difference. But for some significant health issues, I would still be working. Thank goodness the Government has a program to help people out who become medically disqualified. And....it opened an 1811 position for a new person! That was 32 years ago and I still miss it. Fortunately, I'm still close enough that I can attend the monthly retired police association meetings and our annual reunion in Ocean City, Maryland. We also have our own Facebook page and a steady stream of e-mails from our Fraternal Order of Police lodge to keep up with who is doing what. Spent 6 years as an MP. Got out at age 24 and was hired as a LEO with the State of Florida. Spent the next 22 1/2 years and attained the rank of Captain. I was forced to medically retire in 2010 due to a very serious accident I had. I spent my entire adult life in Law Enforcement. Do I miss it? Sure I do, but I prefer to forget all my LEO time because it is a thankless job that most people would refuse to do. For the majority of my time as a LEO, I was looked down upon by the civilian population. If I had it all to do over again, I would have chosen a different career path.
