I've been a Freemason since 1983, & enlisted in 1991. At that time, the National Sojourners membership was limited to Commissioned & Warrant Officers & Senior NCOs. As I was taught, Masonry is supposed to bring all men together: the high & low, the rich & poor, on one level regardless of station in life outside the lodge room. The Officer requirement didn't mesh with that to me. I know the Sojourners have changed their rules to allow all servicemembers & veterans regardless of rank. That said, I still have a bitter taste in my mouth about the organization. Maybe I'll change my mind as I age. That's my 2¢ worth

I get that. How about the shrine though? For the longest time you had to be a Knight Templar or 32* to even petition. A simple blue lodge loving Brother wasn't allowed to petition. Luckily, that was changed too.

I as well wasn't happy about those requirements either. Luckily enough of our Sojourner Brothers felt the same and kept moving for a change repeatedly.

My dad was a proud Shriner in Boumi Temple of Baltimore, MD. I think it's why he joined the York Rite. I know they (the Shrine) do good work, I'm not really that interested in joining. No real draw there for me.
