The troops could hardly wait to get their hands on me, but I lost the one and only one chance I ever had to cross the line. Regrettably we were ordered north in response the North Koreans shooting down an electronic surveillance plane with all aboard lost. That regrettable loss of all 31 souls has always stayed in my mind. I used a T-2 on traverses for navigation. This was long before GPS, too close to the magnetic pole for much help, so everything was visual which you could see 50-100+ miles easy on clear days (most were). Took my bearings and dropped them onto a chart using a 3-Arm protractor. Pretty easy. Had to use different techniques in a White Out. Mostly you hunkered down but if doing a SAR, wind direction, feel of the snow ridges under the tracks, etc. and tedious slow speed eventually got you there.
