I just took and passed it this past August. Definitely take practice tests, and I got the CompTIA Security+ SY0-401 Exam Prep App and used it a ton. You definitely wanna cram for at least a week just to make sure you're prepared.

The SEC + can be a bear unless you put forth an effort on it soley. We sometimes use boot camps with guarantee pass. I know through the company we work with they provide a lot of information. Send me your contact information and I will try to forward you somethings that may make it easier for you.

Read the book and try your best to understand the concepts if you can't get into a Security+ course. I've taken and passed SY0-201 and SY0-401 now and the concepts we're the same with the addition of couple new things in 401.

I would strongly recommend drilling the different types of encryption into your head so you can quickly recall the type (synchronous or asynchronous), number of bits, and common uses. Also know the common ports and their protocols (useful for all the CompTIA basic tests). At least for me those were the biggest hangups that I had. I also went into the test center and wrote down those pieces of information on the notes sheet as soon as I got there.

Most of the test is memorization, definitions, and acronyms. Crypto is generally the hardest concept, so spend a little extra time to make sure you understand the algorithms and processes associated with it. The simulators are relatively new... You can go to the CompTIA website or google help for Sec+ simulations. http://www.professormesser.com is a great source for understanding concepts.

Take as many practice tests as you can. Only a small percentage of people pass a certification test the first time they take it. Out of the half dozen computer certs I have, I think the CompTia A+ and Network+ were the only ones that I passed the first time.

I recently took the exam and passed. I would recommend using different sources to study: book, flashcards, practice tests similar to how CompTIA words there questions, and look into the simulations. When you take the exam just keep yourself relaxed and don't spend too much time on the questions, the first few questions are generally the simulations which take up the most time depending on the question.

Study methods depend on your level of experience. I have found where I have little to no experience on given topic, powering through the reading material helps tremendously. However, where I have some experience on the topic I choose to skim a chapter then take the end of chapter test. Sometimes I will go right to the end of chapter test directly, and if I pass with a 90% or better I don't read the chapter. This enables me to focus on my weak areas to keep my studying as directed as possible. This method has worked for me throughout my career. Once you are completing end of chapter tests with 90% or better you should be ready for any certification exam. Good luck!! You got this!

I agree with 1LT Anna Catudal. I took the 1 week course through CECOM and watched Professor Messer's YouTube videos. Just study the port numbers, OSI model and the encryption algorithms, and watch the youtube videos should help. I was able to pass the SY0-401 test by studying these items. Good test taking skills will also help eliminate some of the incorrect answers on the exam.

Buckle down and do it. Have a bottle or case on hand for afterwards. The test sucks. Did it in 7 weeks. For studying, labs and taking realistic exams, use Boson.com The tests are truly as hard if not harder than the real thing.
