Anybody else feel that the issue of "Fake News" is just a smoke screen to excuse the media's manipulation of the news?

Of course. I feel Denzel Washington said it best:
[The actor, director, producer said, "If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you do read it, you're misinformed."
"So what do you do?" asked the reporter.
Washington said, “That’s a great question. What is the long-term effect of too much information? One of the effects is the need to be first, not even to be true anymore. So what responsibility do you all have? To tell the truth. Not just to be first. But to tell the truth. We live in a society now where it's just first, who cares, get it out there. We don't care who it hurts. We don't care who we destroy. We don't care if it's true. Just say it, sell it. Anything you practice you'll get good at — including BS," said Washington.]
The media itself has not been accountable for the things they have been reporting. Instead of owning up to it, they're using "fake news" as a scapegoat. When we have Brian Williams... the guy who was suspended/fired for reporting fake news... lecturing us on which news sources we can and can't trust, you know the media is desperate.

There are days where I feel most of the news is 'fake' in a 1984 Ministry of Truth way.

Yes, when complaining about Fake News, we should first remember the poster boys of it, Dan Rather and Brian Williams.
