Anyone ever serve at Ft Ord, California before it closed?

Ft Ord was closed in 1994 as part of the 1991 BRAC Commission. It was home of the 7th Infantry Division. The remaining 7th ID units moved to Ft Lewis, WA once it closed. This former US Army post was right up next to the beach in Monterey Bay, California. One could walk to the warm and sunny beach in minutes from the barracks. My older brother served there in the early 1990s. Of all places that closed, why Ft Ord? I would think the Army would have kept it and renovated all the buildings.
Would you like to have served there and been close to the Monterey Bay beach?

I was there for basic in the 72 and then back there in 77 with the 7th DMMC. I did not enjoy basic there but once stationed back there it was great. Golf course was awesome.

I wasn't there back in the day, but I just left from DLI. It was gorgeous and the weather was perfect. I loved waking up every morning watching the sun rise over the bay.

Was there at DLI for a few years, and the entire Ord area really confused me. Why has it been untouched? Why waste the area? Hundreds of run-down buildings everywhere.

I have been there - after it closed. Got to tour it while I was at Camp Hunter-Liggett for the Longbow Apache testing and trials.

Sad that it is no longer open or really used.

Actually, I spent quite a bit of time over at the Ft. Ord Chapel. The congregation is but a few, but those that are there are the retirees and spouses. I am the type that would like to listen (as my head often makes movies of what people are speaking about) as they'd regale myself and whoever would listen with stories of days gone by. It was wonderful for both sides, they shared experiences and I learned alot. I now wish I had interviewed them and wrote out their stories. It might be a good project for someone there. I even learned about hidden tunnels to the beach! There are still several there, but with time the numbers decrease. That was such a rich history that should be better preserved. I wish I was there back in the day when it was buzzing.

My parents met at Fort Ord back when my mother was a dietician in the Army and my father was in an Air Cav unit with the 7th ID. I constantly hear them talking about how beautiful the location was and all the great things there was to do there. It's too bad they closed it down.

I was at Ft. Ord/Ft. Hunter Liggett from '77-'80 and again in '81-'84. I sure miss being in that area. Some of the best golf courses in the Army.

Not so sure of the warm and sunny part. Ft. Ord was the low spot in the bay and the hot valley would suck in the fog every day over Ft. Ord.

It was a beautiful spot to be stationed and there were plenty of outdoor options. Anyone responding ever go to the races at Laguna Seca on the back end of Ord?

I was stationed at Ft. Ord from Dec. 1976 until May of 1981 I spent the first 8 months with HHB 1/79th FA in the 7th Inf. Div. I spent the next 3 years and 9 months with HHC CDEC, DCSEX, Project Team III. During my time at Ft. Ord I also spent time at Ft. Irwin, Camp Roberts, Ft. Hunter Liggett and Panama. I loved every bit of my time there. I was saddened when I heard of it's closure, and I was really saddened in Dec. 2012 when I went through there and saw how it is now being neglected and allowed to just fall into ruins.

Yes, this was my first permanent party assignment in 77-78. I qualified with the M203 grenade launcher in the back 40. I remember forced marches with 2 canteens and full butt pack and other LBE, load bearing equipment.

I remember pulling Post Interior Guard, PT around Stilwell Hall, and on the economy was Seaside, Marina, Monterrey Bays' Pebble Beach, 17 mile drive, Big Sur, Watsonville, and Salinas. I had duty at Paso Robles' Camp Roberts and Ft. Hunter Liggett, and Ft. Irwin et al.

I changed MOS and attended DLI from 89-90 and lived on Fort Ord. It was a great tour. However, when you are looking to save money, Fort Ord is a great choice for bases to close. Of course in typical fashion it ends up costing more than keeping it open! We are so stupid...

We were there for 30 days of training, December 1990, before going to Saudi Arabia for Operations Desert Shield/Storm. We got one weekend to do what we wanted and a friend of my Mom's and me, Rod a retired Marine, flew out in his private plane from NV. We had a great time seeing Monterey Bay beach, walking on the wharf, and the food was great, all compliments of Rod who had served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He passed away a few years ago...RIP Rod and thanks for your service and the great memories!

Ft. Ord was my first duty station out of 68J AIT in 1990. I was assigned to D Co, 1/123 Aviation Regiment, working Aircraft Armament on AH-1J Cobras. We worked at the airfield just off main post, I think it was just on the north side of Reservation Road, on the east side of Marina. A great first posting! Loved the area. The weather over the bay had it's issues. We used to call it Planet Ord - many foggy days, but drive a little north past Marina or south past Seaside and the sun was usually out. Spend a lot of time down in Monteray or Carmel, or up in Santa Cruz. Did a lot of aircraft gunnery work at Hunter Ligget and Camp Roberts. I'd love to here from anyone else who served in the 123rd.

I was stationed at Fort Ord from '79 to '81, transferring to the Presidio of San Francisco for the remainder of my hitch. I'm a California native who never left California! No splashing around the Ocean there unless you have a wet suit, not a surfer's paradise, nearby Santa Cruz fills that bill. Ironically, I was awarded my BA at UC Santa Cruz after the Army adventure...much nicer weather and a very hip community. Fort Ord offered the excellent distraction of nearby Monterey and Carmel California. However, a little difficult to enjoy without a six figure salary....you might catch a glimpse of Clint Eastwood who owns a restaurant and Jazz venue in Carmel. He was also the Mayor of Carmel at one point.

I'm fascinated with the names of Army forts. Many like Fort Lee, VA; Fort Bragg, NC, and Fort Hood, Tx; are named for Confederate Generals. Geez, they were traitors after all! Not Edward Ord, General Edward Ord was solidly in the Union camp, one of Grant's reliable subordinates.

The Monterey Bay is a lovely piece of California real estate. There is a lot of history and nostalgia around Fort Ord. However, I prefer its current mission: Home of the California State University, Monterey Bay.

My Father both enter and left service at Ft Ord, CA; He attended basic training in 1971 and ended his service in 1981. Not that they compare but oddly both locations my Dad and I attend basic were hit by BRAC. I attended basic training at Ft Dix, NJ and now it is partly used by USAR/USANG; however my old barracks in now part of the prison system located a Ft Dix.

I took my basic training in Alpha 8th Bg third Brigade Jun 62-Aug 1962. Beautiful place but during that time the only time we wore summer uniform was to the Salinas Rodeo. It was cold due to the gulf stream off the coast. I was in the 91st division (trng) and went back in 1976 for infantry training to certify as a test supervisor, then the reserve training divisions reopened the basic training portion of Fort ord to catch up reserve and national guard basic training. I returned for training and rifle and pistol matches up to the late 80s. Then when the base closures begin the committee totally disregarded the mandate to close only one base in a geographic area. In the bay area alone they closed Presidio Of San Francisco, Treasure Island, Mare Island, Oakland Army terminal, Oak knoll Naval Hospital, Alameda Naval Air Station, Moffett field, and Fort Ord. Of 32 base closures world wide that year 22 were closed in California.

I was inducted there before later going to Camp Roberts for Basic and Wire training. It was a pretty camp. I recall an officer training men on the mortar there that forgot and shot the round straight up, killing him and some of his trainees. Those that survived never forgot that.

CPT Jacob Swartout, I never got to visit Fort Ord. However, the architecture is reminiscent of that at Fort McClellan, AL (and many other posts as well). Similar to Fort Ord, Fort McClellan fell victim to the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) process of 1995 which ultimately led to its official closure on 20MAY99. This is a photo of Remington Hall (the Officers' Club) before it fell into disrepair.

I went through Basic training 06/62-08/62 at Ft Ord CA, went to signal school at Gordon GA went to Germany for 30 months. Later I joined the 91st Div(training) in 1976, went to Ft Ord several times over the next 10 years.

I served there as an ADA platoon leader. All of our batteries - but not the battalion HQ - moved to Fort Drum. Quite a difference from being on the coast of California to upstate NY!

I served there in 1978. I was in HHC, 7th Infantry Division. I was assigned to the FORSCOM Signal Security Detachment and I worked for the Division G-2, who was COL George Strimbu. His deputy was MAJ Freddie Kennedy. Both outstanding Soldiers and good men. My detachment had 10 positions in it, but there was one person there when I arrived, and he was PCSing within two weeks. So I was the entire detachment for five months. lt was in a lovely spot, that's for sure, I just didn't have much time to enjoy it.

Planet Ord was my first permanent duty from Apr '89 through Jan '93 with HHC 2/9 IN (Manchu). Deployed to Panama for Operation Nimrod Dancer in May '89 and returned to the planet in Jul '89. Then deployed to Operation Just Cause Dec '89 through Jan '90. Many FTXs to Hunter Liggett (Hungry Lizard) and a couple rotations though NTC. Was on the ADVON when 2/9 was moved to Fort Lewis, WA and remained a Manchu until Jun '95. Best duty location and unit in my 12 year stint in the Army.

I served in the 3rd AVN Brigade in Yuma Proving Grounds in 1971. We moved to FT ORD that year and became the 155th AVN Brigade. I loved the enlisted club and the beach. i also did tdy at Hunter Ligget from there. Left fo Nam in the winter of 71.

77-80 Spec 4 Paul Marquardt Co B 14th Engineer Battalion (Red Scarves) Hated those things!Lol 13th member of the original Fort Ord Rodeo team! We came out of the chutes in Salinas 78, One clubhouse 2 Mechanical bulls one northern team at Ord ,One southern team at Liggett! when we left! Started with an idea in Stuby's Garage/bar/bedroom as we were riding bulls and broncs anyway! Over 60 members when we left!

I was stationed at Fritch Army Airfeild from 1976 thru 1979 and was with HHC USAG unit. I refueled all aircraft, fixed wing and rotary wing and was involved with the first closed curcuit refueling system.

I was in the infantry there as a TOW gunner then switched to the bugle service with the lightfighter band, my infantry unit was HHC 3/27 wolfhounds from 1986-1988, later I switched to the Navy in 2000 because I couldn't get the local army recruiter to respond. Had to feed my kids somehow.

I was stationed there between 1975 and 1977 when I was discharged. Am just now attempting to find out what units were there then. I was a cook attached to a medical unit that was attached to an infantry unit. Every time the infantry unit when in the field to train, we had to go with them. One time in the field they were practicing evacuating litter patients to helicopters and everyone wanted me because I was so small. I thought it was an air cav. unit, but I can not find which one was stationed there during that time. Does anyone know?

I got to go to Fort Ord for my senior trip. Seemed like it anyway. I arrived at the Reception Center at about 2150 on November 2, 1965. Some skinny PFC came on the bus and started screaming at us to get off and find a spot on the pavement to stand on. Seems we arrived just before TAPS. After that we got to spend a good part of the night filling out paperwork. Seems they coulda bussed us down there a little earlier instead of having us wait around the Oakland AFFES station all day. Once they took us up the hill I spent the next two months at H-3-3 4th Platoon. Had two DIs. First one was SGT Ford. For some reason he left about mid stream and then we got SGT Lyons. He was a former ROK soldier. Tough as a $2 steak, but very protective of his platoon. If one of the other DIs messed with us, he only did it once. Left Ord in Jan 66 for Fort Holabird, MD. By Oct 66 I was in Nam working in a hamlet between Saigon and the Parrot's Beak. Finished my enlistment at Presidio of SF in 68. Great experiences, but one hitch was enough thanks. Enlisting was a good idea for me in the long run. I got my draft notice in the mail about half way thru basic.

I still live in CA but I don't get down to Monterey very often. Last time I was by there it was obvious that the carpenters were the last ones out. Everything visible from the highway was boarded up. I still remember arriving there in 65. The place looked an ant hill near a Baptist picnic. Stuff was moving all over the place. Of course a war was pending and things were gearing up. Seems foolish to have closed it down, but I contend that the powers responsible for that really didn't have any concept of national security. But I'm just sayin..............

YES--Stationed in the 707th Maint. BN in 1976-I do remember my 1st Sgt was Wilson. At the time I was one of the few WAC's assigned there at the time. I was a 52D20 Generator Operator /repair-after Fort Ord went back to Fort Belvoir VA as an instructor. My fondest memory was sitting in the bleachers during a parade review and the bleachers collapsed! Of course I was in class A's and sitting at the top-still have the newspaper clipping! FYI: i am trying to find a replacement for our unit crest, it was almost 40 years ago and I can not remember what it looked like-can someone post a photo or describe it so I can check it out on ebay? It is the only duty station I do not have my original crest for (but the arm patch is still on one of my uniforms!) I do check back here often.

I got there and we had 105mm guns then went to the 155mm then went Light and went back to the 105mm.

CPT Jacob Swartout I exited the train from Los Angeles to Ft Ord on April 16, 1953. A quick learner, I soon washed my HBT fatigues with metal buttons in the mop sink and started acting as a experienced recruit! Those washed fatigues were the key to going to the head of every line!

1st active duty assignment, 1987-1999, w/ 761st CM CO, across from the Doughboy Theatre, originally under 56th Med Bn, then 14th Eng Bn, both 7th ID (L); ABSOLUTELY LOVED it there! Memories include my 1st & only 3 day Manchu 100M roadmarch (to Hunter Liggett & back), a few 25 milers & many many 8 to 10 milers & PT runs along the beaches & around the Stillwell Hall location, the post runs, the infamous Planet Ord Fog, then Post Cmdr MG Harrison going around post referring to every Soldier as "PFC Lightfighter," the Rally Point Enlisted Club, the 1 hr recall pagers we used to have to sign while on DRF status, AND the after hours spot up in DIVARTY where Soldiers could go pick up bagged meals (cannot remember the name of that place, but ALWAYS a line there!). I truly enjoyed this tour, and feel that it definitely impacted my military career moving forward.

Now just under a year shy of 30yrs later, a DA Civ @ JBLM, a ways up the road from the "Planet," where 7th ID is currently located....

Yes. I was stationed at Fort Ord/Fort Hunter Liggett from 1976-1979 CDEC. Lived in Pacific Grove and officer's quarters when training at Liggett. Great experience and awesome duty station. Tested TOW systems mounted on APC's. Would like to go back to see what is left.

I took Basic Training there in the summer of 74, before going to AIT at FT. Sill. After being out of the Army for a couple of years i enlisted again an got FT. Ord as a duty station assigned to 7th AG CO. Was truly a great duty station, still miss her today after all these years.

Was stationed there. You are right, I have written to see if part of it could be upgraded...for homeless vets, then a homeless section. I left in 1986, and it was possible to buy a house...would have been costly, but one (I live in Pacific Grove) and a fixer upper is close to or over one million, we moved into a condo.

Yes, it is beautiful and there is a housing development on East Garrison..high 400's to high 600's. It is near the beach, but a pretty good walk. I would drive. It is also in a bad school disreict...English is rare and it is about 60% welfare.free lunch. I have some pictures of my old headquarters, and they are a disaster. The only good thing to happen, is my battalion HQ is now having a large VA clinic built on its site.

My wife is a professor at DLI, so she totally loves this area. It will stick it to the tourists, and don' treat the residents all that good. It is geared for tourism.

Was with the 4th Bn. 17th Infantry. S-1 and Numerous Det Cdrs. Best assignment. Now, I live in Pacific Grove, about a mile from the Presidio, where my wife is a professor. Nice area (on the expensive side) but the schools in PG are number one. A fixer upper house could be near one million...rents are at $3,000 per month. But, can't beat the scenery and beauty.

I took my AIT Inf training there in 1970 and then I was stationed there at Co F 41st Inf. from Sept 71 to Oct 72. I actually worked at Camp Hunter Legget some 80 miles south of Ft Ord. CDEC was where I worked. (Combat Development and Experimentation Command). We tested the XM19 against the M16. The XM19 fired the flechette round and the only other experiment I participated in was the Starlight Scope and a small portable Radar set up. All testing was done at night. I remember well the serviceman's club. Stillwell Hall located across the street from Main Gate. You could step out back behind the SERVICE Club and there was the Pacific Ocean. Had a great time at Ft Ord both times. I had to favorite places to party. The Corral Club in Seaside and ???? Gosh, I can't remember the name of the second. The Corral Club was owned and operated by three guys. Fred, Merle and Hans. They were the best. I was such a good customer they would sent me tickets everytime they had a main attraction playing and I would go to the head of the line and pay for my table inside. It was all country. Edit: Oberg's was the name of the second club.

Several gave me their names I wrote to them and they wrote back sent to an address on Depot Hill Capitola a friends mailing zip. I ended up wth the little girl name Kate the kite flyer. Residing along the beautiful Monetery Bay - one feels a never ending gratitude. Fort Ord was this lively hood. The men and women decorated our beaches, restaurants, hotels (when-family arrived for visits). They spoke with us, of course "soldiers are just like the rest of us." I asked all sorts of questions. It is the very Vietnam vets I enjoyed I wish to reconnect with. Several I wrote to during their tour of duty. Due to the fact I was a runway during the time of Pop Fest - Berkeley riots - I lost track. I did have several return letters, I kept for years stored in a shoe box. 2011 they seem to have been tossed out during a nasty divorce settlement. I took AIT at Ft. Ord in early 1967. It didn't seem like we had much time to enjoy the sights or maybe I just didn't care at that time in my life. I was drafted, signed up for OCS, then dropped out when I found out it was a 2 year commitment once commissioned. Therefore, Ft. Ord and the infantry I went.

Yes. Served with the 7th MP and 54th MP at Fort Ord. Our barracks (MP) were near the main Mess Hall, and down the street from Silas B. Hayes Hospital on Giggling Road..lol..
I got to Fort Ord right out of McClellan in October of 1979. My C/O was Cpt. James McDaniels (a marathon runner) who ran us ragged during PT..lol.. Fort Hunter Liggett was the Army's best kept secret. When I got orders for 3rd Infantry, 981st MP in Kitzingen, Germany, I about cried. Top told me to "Buck up, new meat".. And, our MOS was 95B10-R3..:-)

I served at Fort Ord from 1987 to 1991. I was in Charlie company 2/27 INF 7th ID (LIGHT) Wolfhounds. I loved Fort Ord. I went back in 2010 with my best friend for my unit. I have gotten back in contact with over 140 of those brave souls since then. COHORT program failed????HOW! LOL HOOAH!

Did our Spring FTX there in 88-89 as a ROTC cadet near Silas B. Hayes Army Hospital. 4-5 hour bus ride from Los Alamitos, our rally point. Got to hump around post a lot. Great memories - yes, cold and wet too. I remember meeting some British troops who were there for training, some of them had just served in Northern Ireland.

CSC, 3rd Battalion, 17th Infantry - 11H Infantry. First permanent assignment. 1982-83 - made the taxi driver take me to the beach the night I got there on the way to the fort. Grew up in Minnesota - wanted to see the beach real bad. He took me to some cheezy beach in Seaside.

We spent a lot of time at Fort Hunter Liggett. Still one of my favorite places to be stationed. We used to take the Fort Ord taxi to the beach in Carmel or to downtown Monterrey for Jazz music.

Yes, I served from 1962 to 1964. I had BT and after went to USACDCEC. It was a great and beautiful place. As a Swiss citizen, I payed my part in serving two years in the Army. I became an American citizen two years after my HD but I came back twice a year as I had such a great souvenirs. Even, after leaving USA to go back in Switzerland, I came back to Ford Ord four times and was sad to see the old barracks let to go.

I never was stationed there. I grew up there though. In Seaside actually. A lot of my friends parent's and as I was older some friends were stationed there. Spent a lot of my time running around the woods there (dependent of a retiree so it was easy to get around).

I served in CDCEC from 1962 to 1964. It was good time and a fantastic location. After I went back to Switzerland, I came back to visit Ford Ord in 1974, 1996 and 2006. I was sad to see my old barracks going away and the whole place so empty.

Stationed there from 77 - 79, it was my last post. My first child (son) was born there at Silas B. Hayes. I was an air traffic controller with the 7th Aviation Bn but was one of the very few that wasn't attached to USACC. I was in the 7th Inf and when they moved, I moved, where they went, I went. It was a great duty assignment. Ft Irwin, Hunter-Ligget, once even got to go MCB 29 Palms (Stumps).

I was stationed there from late 1969 to early 1970 for Advanced Infantry Training, Mortar. Loved the area including Monterrey with Fisherman's Wharf and was spellbound by Carmel-by-the-Sea's beauty. I also remember stumbling upon the racetrack and digging up long-buried k-rations which I devoured despite their very tinny, old and suspect taste (I was always hungry in Basic and Advanced Training!). Although I've been back to the area several times in recent years, I thought that Fort Ord had been completely wiped off the face of the earth so I never bothered looking for my old training barracks. Inspired by this site and other's memories, I fully intend to make every effort to find any remnants that might remain regardless of whether they are listed anywhere in any travel books or street signs. As Bob Hope theme song goes Thanks for the Memories.

P.S. Having lived most of my prior life in upstate NY and the middle of PA, Fort Ord's weather was Shangri-La to me. I would often strip down to my t-shirt when everyone else had their fatigue jackets zippered and buttoned to the very top. I giggled when some of my fellow draftees shivered violently when I hadn't even suffered goosebumps. And yes, at that time Vietnam was at the height of its unpopularity and many if not most of the trainees -- including a large complement of "undocumented immigrants" in my company -- had been selected by their draft boards before the lottery took effect.

i HAD BASIC AT FT. ORD. GOT THERE IN JUNE OF 75. I WAS IN THE OLDER BARRACKS ON TOP OF A HILL, GOT TO SEE THE BAY FROM MY BED, WILL NEVER FORGET HOW GREAT IT WAS. WE MARCHED DOWN TO THE RIFLE RANGE. HAD TO GO UNDER THE HI-WAY, THIS TOOK US TO SAND RIGHT ABOVE THE WATER WHILE SHOOTING TOWARDS THE BAY. SOME DAYS WE HAD TO WAIT WHILE BOATS WERE CLEARED OUT. MORNINGS WERE SUNNY AND COLD, BY NOON IT WAS VERY HOT AS WE MARCHED THRU SAND. I WAS IN CALIFORNIA AROUND 2007 AND WENT TO FT ORD. COULD NOT BELIEVE IT, NO ONE AROUND. I DROVE MY CAR UP SEVERAL HILLS TRYING TO FIND MY OLD BARRACKS, THE TWO STORY WOODEN ONES WERE EVERY WHERE.
AFTER SCHOOL AT FT. SILL I WENT TO HUNTER LIGGETT MILITARY RESERVATION. I SPENT REST OF MY TIME IN THE BEST BARRACKS THERE, INSTRUMENTATION BARRACKS I THINK. THESE WERE THREE STORY CONCRETE ON THE MAIN ROAD DOWN FROM THE HACIENDA. MOST OF THE HOUSING WERE CHICKEN COUPS. I WORKED AT THE PROPANE REFUELING ACROSS THE RIVER A COUPLE MILES FROM BASE. ALL WE DID WAS TO GO FAR INTO THE MOUNTAINS AND REPLACE TANKS USED TO POWER THE RELAY STATIONS.

I was stationed at Fort Ord for 24 months, from 1989-1990. Left there a day or two before they stopped PCS's, due to Operation Desert Storm. Went onto Germany for the next two years and following that I thought I was done with the Army, but a National Guard Recruiter signed me up for the Maryland Army National Guard and I went on to serve another 17 years, for a total of 21 years. God rest my Recruiter, who took his life way much too soon, as I have him to thank for my years in the National Guard and my eventual military pension, at age 59 and 9 months(due to time served in OIF). I sometimes wonder how different my life would have been if I had not PCS'ed to Germany. I will never forget Fort Ord and must say I still run to this day, 30 years later, based on the Sergeants who inspired me to be a great runner.

I served with the 519th Maint. Co. / 707th Maint. BN. / 7th ID (Light) - It was the best time. I was stationed there in early 1986 to mid 1988. I couldn't have asked for a better first Duty Station. I am planning a trip back to the "Planet" next year in 2018. I am saddened to see what all has disappeared. The biggies for me are Stillwell Hall. I know she fell away a good while ago now. I also noticed that recently the 519th Barracks are now gone. The university is really tearing down and building up. I also see on Google Earth that our Maint. Co. Area of Operation is gone also. The footprints are still there and hopefully they will still be there next year. Take Care All

I was stationed at Fort Ord in 1967 after returning from Korea. I like a lot of guys from Korea and Vietnam we were assigned to the CDEC and lived in the World War Two barracks. It was a great place to end my military duty and some times I wish I would have never returned to Minnesota. Our duties consisted of going on maneuvers with men, I think might have been civilians with radio trucks and maybe even dishes on top of the trucks. We would wear wrist bands that had buttons of different shapes and were told to do Army formations like march straight then half left then about face etc. all the while pressing certain buttons. As usual you sat around then started all over again and again. Can anybody tell me what the heck we were doing out in wide open spaces.
But the fun times like going down to Monterey Bay, 17 mile drive, cannery row and fisherman's warf.
I think we were some of first guys to go to the new NCO club. What a great place to be at the age of 21.

Yes. In 1981-82 I served with the 6/80th Field Artillery as a medic. I never understood why they closed it. They haven't done much with it since it closed. There are more posts that could have been closed instead. Stupid people making stupid decisions. They probably never set foot on it.

I was there twice...total 4 years or more. First in 1969 to 1971got out and requested to return when I reenlisted in 1972 . I was assigned to DENTAC...I worked in dental clinic 4 as a dental hygienist . Then when I came back I was assigned to the dependent dental clinic where I cleaned all the wives teeth(10 patients a day). I worked in the Hospital and later was manager of the Presidio of Monterey theatre when off duty. It was my most memorable assignment. Well with the exception of Holland and Ft. Hamilton in Brooklyn New York......did I mention Berlin?

C 2/17th in '79 and '80. Because the Cold War had ended, there had been talks to lean down the Army, but nothing was really decided. That was until a major oil pipe and sewage leak was discovered causing a major reclamation project on a major portion of the base. I'm guessing that was the tipping point in the decision to close the base.
I use to go to the beach on some evenings and weekends and it was very near so many beautiful places. I spent a career in the Army and Ft Ord was by far the best place I served.

Ft. Ord was my very first duty station. When I arrived, 3/9 was at Ft. Sherman, Panama for JOTC. My second day, after processing, I did the Manchu Miler. The next day, I was on my way to Ft. Sherman, for JOTC. Before our rotation was over, Nimrod Dancer/Just Cause happened. Returned from Just Cause and 1 week later, I did the Ft. Hunter Liggett Hundred. Needless to say, I loved Ft. Ord and was proud to be a Manchu.

I was stationed at the old hospital in the Mental Health Section from January 2, 1970 to August 7, 1971. The hospital was a pretty loose operation. Most of us lived off base and my duty assignment was DLI. We are trying to contact people that were there from 68-71 with the idea of having a reunion. Sadly, a number of us have passed away.

I had a great time and my barracks was about a mile off the beach. I remember looking out my window and watching the waves rolling toward the beach of Monterey Bay.

I served with HHC 2/17 Inf '78-'79. The end of the Cold War brought about a lot of base closings in the US and Europe. The rising cost of operating Ft. Ord made it a prime target for closure.The cost to renovate the old barracks was prohibitive. Ft Ord was my primary choice when I enlisted. My barracks was at the top of Infantry Hill at the corner of Giggling Rd and 6th Avenue. Bldg #4430. There are some great Fort Ord FB sites that have tons of pictures and info on the current conditions there. Unfortunately, most of the barracks are gone now as well as the old Soldiers Club, Stillwell Hall...BUFFALO!

Spent July ‘91-June ‘93 as a Cobra Pilot in 1-123rd ATK BN.
Lived on base in Patton Park and loved the area. Served with a great group of guys from the BN Commander, the XO, S3, my Company Commander, guys I flew with and the guys who kept us flying.
Sadly we lost two warrants due to a Cobra crash in June, 1992. Jeff and Casey know you are not forgotten, thought of often and remembered in many hearts.
We worked hard as a team and played as we worked.
Twenty-years later I toured the old post and got a half a block from my old house. Saw the old orderly room on main post and it’s a law school now.
This post, area and the 7th ID Light will always have a special place in my heart and mind.
Former members of the 7th ID Light can join the 7th ID Association, which helps the history of the division live on.

I was assigned to HHC DISCOM 7th I.D with attachment orders with the 2nd Brigade (Cold Steel) Property Book Officer Team 2 NCOIC. I was one of the few soldiers to see Ft Ord. rollup the division colors for the last time due to the BRAC program. SGT HARLEY G HARP I STARTED AIT at Fort ord 1968 went to Vietnam 11-68-11-69 returned back to Ft Ord late 1971 with the 54th Military Police co , went to Germany with 501st MP co for 2 years and returned to Fort Ord early 1973 served again with the 54th MP Co working with the Traffic Section as a Accident Investigator, I went to Physical Security School and became a Physical Security Inspector with a MOS of 95B4H3. I loved Fort Ord and Enjoyed all my time there .
I left the Service in Dec 1975. Fort Ord will always be in my memories.

Basic Training, Oct - Dec 1970. I could see Monterey bay from the 2nd floor of my barracks, but well remember the beach ranges. There were some good people there. We marched to the beach ranges, went under US 1 and if we turned right the ranges were close, easy march. If we turned left, it was a hard hilly long march. After the first month, it was a better place.

I went elsewhere around Fort Ord inside and out. I was there when the Special Forces taught us how to be a prisoner of war which only meant don't get caught. A 5 mile course in the dark at 10pm it started. Tracked by dog and personnel if you make it through you get a jeep ride back to the Company. I was #2 I don't know who was #1

I have a few pics from my Ft. Ord days, 1/79th FA C Bat '76-78. First one is Ft. Greely Alaska '78. Went in support of infantry. Three weeks in tents in January. A tad cold. The next is wagon-train to Ft. Irwin CA '77. We made numerous trips down there. It was hot but fun. Last is a typical mess hall at Ft. Ord '76. These guys are in my unit but I cannot remember their names. Hands down the best years of my life but I didn't know it at the time. If anyone recognizes me please respond. I have more pics but I need to scan them. I'll get more out here. I'm sure people will enjoy seeing them. Copy and re-post if you like.

Hi. I was stationed there from 1982 to 1984, in the 107th MI Battalion. My home town of Merced was only two hours away, so I actually spent a lot of time on the weekends visiting friends and family. When I didn't have plans for the weekend, however, it was great being able to explore Monterey and the surrounding areas. I came back to this area after I got out of the Army and I've been living here ever since 1987. It's a beautiful area and I can't imagine living anywhere else.

I was Stationed at Ft. Ord in 1979. I was with the 54th MP Co and 54th MP Det at Hunter Liggtett Military Reservation 80 nmiles south of Fort Ord. I also did a few months with the 7th MP Co. while some of the troops were sent to Ft. Chaffee to guard the Cuban Refugees. I served my last 10 months with the 54th at Fort Ord.

I was assigned to Fort Ord for last year of a 3 year enlistment. After a year in Nam Fort Ord was a great place to be. I was assigned to an AIT unit C-1-4 and after promotion to Sgt. E5 and I was given the Supply Room to manage. Met a lot of great people especially Staff Sgt. Juan Naputi who was the Supply Sgt. before handing it off to me. We first lived on Hilby in Seaside until my promotion and qualified for on base housing on Napier St. My daughter was born there (old hospital) August 14, 1970.

MCAS(H) Tustin was like that. You could walk out the front gate and be out in town. Tustin was well placed (along with MCAS El Toro) in Orange County, CA. At first, El Toro was surrounded by Orange Groves. But then developers started buying the land and building houses and it didn't take long before people started complaining about the jet noise, and the noise of the helicopters flying overhead. Shameful. If you buy a house next to an airport, you have to expect aviation noise. But politics being what it is, the bases ended up being closed so that developers could likewise profit from developing them into housing.

Everything that's nice, good, and attractive [as far as duty stations go] seems to be short-lived for the military. But it's like that for all nice places. There was a time that San Francisco wasn't overrun by a certain group that fancies itself a minority needing special treatment and you didn't have homeless people sharing needles, pooping on the sidewalk, and choking up the streets with their tents. Once people find something nice, they flock to it... but they all don't come for the right reasons. Some folks ruin things for everyone else. San Diego was once a sleepy little military town in Southern CA that had virtually no crime because a sizeable chunk of the population was military. You wouldn't recognize it now. It's developed and overgrown to the point where the infrastructure can barely support the population... Water has to be rationed, crime has jumped higher, along with all the other negatives that affect larger towns and cities, such as increased gang activity and the violence that goes along with it, higher taxes, etc. etc. Part of me wonders how long it will be before they move the BootCamps in San Diego out into the desert. During war, nothing is too good for Johnny... and during peacetime, NOTHING! is too good for Johnny!!!

I served there in the CID from 1986 to 1989. I then took a short tour to the Korean DMZ and went to the forensic science course at Scotland Yard in London. On my return to Fort Ord in 1991, I was required to fly over the place so I could be certified as a hostage negotiator by attending that course at Fort McClellan, AL. So, though I left in 12/89, I did not back until 6/91 and remained there until 12/94 when I retired. The closure was political more than practical. About 70% of the housing was new, as was the Main PX and commissary. Much of the Army post was not torn down, has fallen in disrepair and is a ghost town. Fort Ord is an example of the poor military leadership from the Democrats.

I went to basic training at Ft. Ord in 1973. I then returned and served with the 7th ID 1976 through 1977. Then with the 91st Div Tng Army Reserves from 1977 through 1978.

After I left active duty, I was sent there to survey all the ranges for the Nasty Girl. I did such a great job, that range control wanted to give me a full-time job. It was not the place you guys described. More like a ghost town with a skeleton crew of about 8 personnel. The people were great, but I couldn't see myself doing 14 more years there. This was back in 2006.

Spec 4 Robert Ruffell was there in 78 to 80 attached to the 519th Maintence rapid deployment company also attached 707th MT battalion that was a great little fort and I lived in seaside when I got married in Monterey then deployed to hanau Germany for 3yrs
We do go back and visit fort Ord from time to time

I was stationed there from 81 to 84. It was great. I lived off base in Monterey and it was definitely beautiful. I don't know why they closed such a great base either.

I lived in Salinas, was sent to Induction Center in Oakland, then sent back down to Fort Ord for my BCT in October 1971. I was kind of hoping to get away from Salinas, but didn’t happen.
I was later stationed at Fort Ord around April 1974 with 14th Engr.Bn. I loved it then.
It was sad to see that Fort Ord was closed.

Fort Ord was a great base. That picture brings back memories, it’s the Combat Leadership Course, pre ranger school training, on the far northern part of the bases. One of my favorite places for training new leaders. On the other side of the base was the Laguna Seca race track, and to the west was the beach, with mountains to the east. It was a great location. We used to run on the beach, do a live fire on the beach, then march to the mountains and do another live fire. There was an odd fog that would roll in, in the afternoon and limit viability. The weather was nice, and off post was good. It sucked when Clinton decided to shut it down out of the blue. We were planning for the Rangers and SF from Fort Lewis to come down, as many of our JTF-6 missions we departed out of Travis AFB, and always landed before them for missions on or below the Southern border. Millions were just invested building up the base, right before it was shut down. Air assault, obstacle courses, confidence courses, combat leadership class, firing ranges, stadium, Mout site, were some of the best in the country and lot of Government agencies trained there.

I did basic training at Fort Or, California with C/1/3 in September 1973. When the Israeli-Arab 1973 War broke out, basic training was cut to five weeks in preparation of quickly training and mobilizing the Army. In preparation for the Negev desert, our drill sergeants took us on runs in the sandy.

I returned to Fort Ord in 1977 after a stint at TUSLOG Det 4 (Turkey) and with the 851st ASA Company (Division Support), 3rd Infantry Division (Mech) in Kitzingen and Wurzburg, Germany. At the time the 7th Infantry Division was a regular, not light infantry division and I was assigned to the 504th ASA Tactical Support Element (ATSE) supporting G-2 7ID. The ATSE later became the cadre for the 601st ASA Company (DS), the division's SIGINT/EW unit. Much of our training was at Camp Irwin and Fort Hunter Liggett, California, as well as an exercise at Yakima Washington were we worked with a Mountain View, California-based reserve ASA Company (Brigade Support).

My fondest memory was living in downtown Monterey, California up from Fisherman's Wharf. My hang out was Kalisa's on Cannery Row.

I served there from 1975-77 with CDEC at Hunter Liggett and Fort Ord. I was married on Fort Ord and lived in Marina a short while. When I was at Liggett it was tough being so isolated and you had to have a car to get away and stay sane. But if you had wheels it was a good part of the country to be in.

I was at Ft. Ord for Basic Training in the fall of 1973. I then returned to the 7th ID 76-77. Then with the 91st Tng Div 77-78 training new Reserve Drill Instructors. I don't know about the warm beaches, when I was their with the 7th ID we were only two barracks rows from the freeway and the fog would come in every morning for PT. When you go inland for training it was very hot. As for Hunter Ligett it was extremely hot. We spent a month walking around in heavy coveralls and face masks spraying dust into the rodent holes to kill flees (allegedly). We could only work 1/2 day every 2 days because of the heat. I took my scuba gear and went over to the coast and dove at Jade Cove and collected jade.

Spent 6 years there. 1979-1985. D Trp 2/10 Air Cav flying AH-1s. Camp Roberts, Hunter Liggett, Ft Irwin/NTC. LOTS of FTX's and Gunneries. LOTS of time in the field. Some of the best memories of a 30+ year career (and the worst). Lived up on the hill next to DLI. GREAT officers club - Animal bar had "all you could eat Steamship round" free on Friday and Saturday nights. Was "Household 6's" introduction to the Army, Army aviation and the Cav when we got married in '82. I think it warped her view of the Army...She still has a "Cav" sticker on her truck - "If you aint Cav, you aint ****".

This building was one of our Instructor buildings for Light-fighter Cadre up until Fort Ord Closed. I was there when this was actually painted...LOL I was at ORD from 87 up until the closing in 94 It was extremely SAD. Military units were mostly gone around 93 then little by little everyone leaving w orders.... I hung on til the end LOL waiting on orders and was one of the last Lifeguards at Fort Ord Pool. So sad.

My mom was stationed at Ft. Ord in 72/73 - i came along at the end of 73, thus ending her Army life. According to her (she met my dad up there, who was not only stationed there (Helo pilot) but he was from the peninsula.. except. I never got to meet him. :-( I got to go to Ft. Orde 3x during the 90's with my jrotc group. was soooo awesome

I was at POM in 88-89. Loved it. Went to Cannery Row museum at the Wharf. Started collecting comic books in earnest. Sold them some years later for Christmas. I wasn't in my right mind then. Sold a few hundred comics for $150. It was a price I came up with. Ohh to have them now.
