Anyone have any experience with being stationed in 3-10 at Fort Polk? How's the unit and the area?

Not much experience with 3-10, but I just left there a year ago after 3.5 year. So I can tell you that 3-10 did just get some brand new Barracks and HQ buildings. The Barracks are really nice in fact. The BDE HQ building is also very nice. At any rate, rent is stupid high, unless you've got tons of guns you don't want to register you are either better off living on post or buying a house. the place is pretty small. It won't get colder than 25 at nigh in the winter, and even then that's a rare thing like 2 nights a year. It's very humid all the time. If you like to hunt, it's pretty easy and cheap to get a license. If you want to hunt off post you'll more than likely have to get in a hunting lease. Houston is just over 3 hours away, as well as Baton Rouge. Alexandria is all right, but it's a bit of a haul. If you don't mind a commute then DeRidder is a nice place to live. The post really isn't that bad, most people hate it because all they have ever seen is Tiger Land and The Box. It really isn't that bad otherwise.

SFC K , I retired here. Originally from Colorado. Polk is what you make of it. Just like anywhere else. Mall is an hour away. Good food if you know where to go. Not a lot of services for special needs dependents. However we did find an awesome specialist in Lake Charles 1 1\2 hours away. Great church community for Christian based religions. Overall, not a bad place to raise a family.

Spent 8 years at Polk, not a bad place, there is a lot of different feelings about Polk, I was with 4/10 until they re-flagged it the area sucks not a lot to do if you are single.
