Anyone have suggestions on shadow boxes/cases that don't take up a lot of space? Something easily portable and creative as well?

Depends if you want a "real steel" box (with your actual hardware) or a photo analog.
You can cram a lot more into a photo and not worry about dinging you real hardware.

The first thing that came to mind was a "Folding Shadow Box."

I suggest you go to a craft show or two, You will find a lot.
