I have recently retired from the NC National Guard and as a Mil Tech (Gov't Employee) for the NC National Guard also.  I am using all resources available to me, these include alumni support (University, Fraternity and Civic Organizations), past vendors I worked with, and am utilizing social media very heavily.  When I first retired I had the mindset that I would not ask friends or alumni for help and would do it myself.  This was quite a wrong thought process, I was getting no where fast.  I found out once I started asking for help and assistance I was amazed at how many people wanted to help me.  My advice is to use every resource available to you.

Thanks for mentioning fraternity, I was in a business fraternity in college. I am currently using my contacts at VFW, MOPH, and KoC to help find my next job. I did not know if it would be worth trying the alumni office at my college or not, but will look at all options now!

I also recommend setting up a LinkedIn profile if you haven't yet and joining Veteran Mentor Network.  Through the Veteran Mentor Network you can have your LinkedIn Profile upgraded to Premium for free.  Start going to as many Networking events as you can and start meeting people and connect with them on LinkedIn.  If you need help or assistance on LinkedIn I'll be more than happy to assist.
