So, I did a search and nothing came up, which was surprising (or people aren't using tags or something). Today I wore my new IPFU for the first time (seems to run a little smaller in the shorts and bigger in the top compared to the old ones...I went from a M top and S bottom and I'm thinking I'm going to need a S top and M bottom, but I digress).

How does...

c. Soldiers will be measured for body fat in stocking feet and standard Army physical fitness uniform trunks and Tshirt. Undergarments that may serve to bind the abdomen, hip, or thigh areas are not authorized for wear when a Soldier is being measured for body fat composition. This includes, but is not limited to spandex shorts or girdle-like undergarments.

...jive with new IPFU shorts that have spandex built in work?

Sure, for now I can kinda tell my Soldiers "hey wear your old PTs on HTWT day" but technically they are perfectly authorized to wear the new PTs.

How could the new PTs be issued, but not a rapid revision or ALARACT or something come out to address the spandex issue? Hell, that's one of the biggest deals in the first days of an NCOES or school ("DON'T FORGET YOU CAN'T WEAR SPANDEX TOMORROW DURING HTWT!!!!!" - we've all heard it)...

Maybe I missed the ALARACT/MILPER

This is a great question, we pick up our next class of candidates on the 21st of January, and we will be taping them shortly after, and I would be willing to bet that will be an issue. The only resolution I can see that may be temporary is if the Soldier is borderline according to AR 600-9 have them change into the IPFU instead of the APFU and re-tape them. Thank you for bringing that question up, I will bring it up today at our meeting.

As of now they will be told to have on the IPFU for height and weight after that they can have the APFU, if they don't have the IPFU and fail it will be addressed by the commandant at that time

The shorts are a part of the uniform. By regulation spandex shorts in PTs are an option which made it easy to say no spandex during height and weight, Now the shorts are part of this uniform you can't go around that, but however, the Soldier can't wear additional spandex that is not part of the uniform.

I think the intent of that section of AR 600-9 is meant to control for "spanx" and slimming undergarments, not spandex made expressly for moisture wicking and preventing chafing.

You could try a little experiment next time you do Height/Weight: have a squad-sized element of volunteers (preferably who will predictably make HT/WT standards) bring both the APFU and IPFU, measure them a couple times wearing the APFU and a couple of times wearing the IPFU, then compare the numbers and see if it makes any real difference.

Sir I don't necessarily disagree with you but it's clear spandex to the Nth degree in the new PTs. Also I don't disagree with the fact that it probably changes nothing, but I can't just ignore the regulation

I'm not asking you to ignore regs...just suggesting that you take the spirit of the regs with the letter of the regs.

CW2 (Join to see) Do you verify what kind of underwear soldiers are wearing? The only soldiers who are "helped" by spandex or Spanx shorts are females, as they are the ones who get measured at the hips. This slimming effect can also be achieved by wearing control top pantyhose with the legs cut off.
Of course if it's an only inch or so you need to make tape; get out the Saran wrap, cover yourself from ribs to top of your thighs and hop on the tread mill for 30 minutes. Just make sure you hydrate well after hight and weight. ( I was on a medication that caused significant weight gain for a while, even while running marathons.)
