I’m brand new to the army. I’m a MP in the army reserves. My unit doesn’t have AGSU patches or DUI’s available. I have a military funeral to attend. I ordered my DUI’s and paid the extra for overnight shipping. A week ago. Do I absolutely need my DUI’s or is it optional. I was able to get everything else squared away. Should I not go, go in civilians, or can I still wear my agsu’s?Wed, 15 Jan 2025 08:40:13 -0500Are DUI’s required with AGSU’s?

Army Regulation (AR) 670-1 and Department of the Army (DA) Pamphlet 670-1 will be your Go To for the wear and appearance of the Army uniform. DUI's are an odd kind of uniform adornment. For regular events, you would wear them; during formal events (such as Dining In or Dining Out) you would not wear them. The question I have for you:

Are you participating IN the Funeral? As in, are you a member of the Funeral Detail?MSG Private RallyPoint MemberWed, 15 Jan 2025 09:10:25 -05002025-01-15T09:10:25-05:00Response by MAJ Ronnie Reams made Jan 15 at 2025 9:51 AM

Pinks and greens were a long time ago, and that is called now AGSU. I think for EM they go on the lapels below the US and branch and on the cunt cap on wearer's left.MAJ Ronnie ReamsWed, 15 Jan 2025 09:51:57 -05002025-01-15T09:51:57-05:00Response by COL John McClellan made Jan 16 at 2025 3:40 PM

Yes, you have to wear them. They are a part of your uniform. I would ask a friend in the unit if they have them.CPT Private RallyPoint MemberThu, 16 Jan 2025 21:45:11 -05002025-01-16T21:45:11-05:00Response by CPT Private RallyPoint Member made Jan 20 at 2025 4:59 PM

OK, I do a lot of these funeral details (Central California). It's 1/3 of my W2 reported income from the USAR.

For the love of god, you need a complete uniform.
DO NOT go in civilians.

Uniform cheat code = There is AR360-1 correct as it pertains to YOU specifically, and there is AR360-1 as it pertains to ANYONE. No one knows what unit you are assigned to, awards and qualifications you do or DO NOT HAVE (or even your rank).

But there are INCORRECT ways to set up a uniform.

So I have new tolerance level when someone shows up to a funeral detail ate up. I have to get them in at least a minimal correct set up. The uniform needs to be correct in my eye for a soldier I do not know from Adam. So I bring with me to funerals my old branch insignia, regimental insignia, and such to fill in the blanks to make a uniform look complete.

****Unrelated to Uniform****
PLEASE learn to fold the flag correctly.
1) Do not leave any fluff in the folds. Make the folds crisp.
2) As you get to the middle of the flag folding the triangles the TIP of the triangle needs to perfectly meet the Blue (tip to blue). Otherwise there will be too much or too little at the last fold to tuck the flag. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO CORRECT IT without unfolding the whole thing in front of a whole funeral audience. You can short fold the last mid triangle to ensure it meets the tip of the blue and avoid having to undo the whole thing.
2a) There are multiple VENDORS for the flags (flags are acquired from the Post Office by the funeral director, so they get what they get). Not all Vendors are the exact same dimensions. So #2 is important to remember. Each vendor has it's own nuances to fold, and you don't know which one you get until you are hands on over the casket.
3) Do not be intimidated by the ceremony. This is not Arlington. Convey your self with proper military bearing and make sure all your movements are deliberate and crisp. 99% everyone will be impressed with that.

Finally................................

If you can......................

Get on the short list with your Casualty Operations Coordinator. If you want to rack up pay and points Funerals are the most sure fire way to get there (there will ALWAYS be funding). AGR's typically don't like taking a day out of work to do them, and random assigned soldiers that do them infrequently (or never) are the ones that show up ate up and can't fold a flag.

But I'm part of a short list of volunteers that do this on the side and pick up funerals assigned units cannot fill.
1) By time you retire you can rack up a year or two worth of points that would match active duty.
2) You get paid your rank level for the day (so even points doesn't matter if you don't plan to retire out)
3) When you become an NCO or an Officer it's a SOLID bullet for your annual evaluation for the "PRESENCE" block of your evaluation. None of your peers are going to come close to that bullet comments.CPT Private RallyPoint MemberMon, 20 Jan 2025 16:59:40 -05002025-01-20T16:59:40-05:00Response by LTC Paul Labrador made Jan 23 at 2025 2:27 PM
