Are Job and Leadership Books more commonly used in other units and duty stations? At least my company doesn't use them at all, and the same with my other team leaders. Why is that? But, yes, we do use leadership books. I’d definitely ask to see if they at least have a template to build one and take the initiative. Not even heard-of. Really common at line-units and company commanders always seem to know what they are. New NCO's don't know about it. High turnover, information overload? Less time for daily tasks since OPTEMPO is insanely high? How will you handle your troops and manage their day-to-day activities, maintain order, their affairs, which you have now been charged? I charge you to be an NCO, Lead by example, keep track of your personnel and their well-being. You are now being placed in a position of authority AND responsibility. How you take responsibility for them as you grow from 1-3 as a Team, 5-7 Squad, 35-75 PLT, etc., as you grow, and are promoted, SGT, SSG, SFC is baselined now. Firstly, we just got lazy, myself included. They are a pain in the butt to maintain and units got stupid busy during the GWOT. Secondly, units made these giant counseling packets, that look like we are trying to start a new country, that contain a vast majority of what goes in a leaders book. Why create a binder with a boat load of info about a Soldier when I can just open their counseling packet and see what they had for breakfast on their third Army birthday?
Thirdly, we went digital. Part of the force modernization Army directives was that units below Brigade do not maintain trackers for something that is an Army Program of Record. So we have emilpo, dtms, medpros, vantage, ucfr, and god know how many other programs that track eveeything that goes in a leaders book, almost instantaneous.
All this and I will say it is a practice we need to get back into. I still maintain binders full of erbs, pt and won qual cards for my company. It's not easy for 100 something Soldiers, but I ha e a training room. 3-9 people is manageable, but will take constant vigilance to maintain records. Use the digital systems, print the tables out and insert them into your books. Below PL and PSG, access to gov computers is limited, so it's better to maintain analog records. They are guides only. If used properly they serve to have developed muscle memory to left and right limits for each level of leadership and Soldier activity in any given situation. Used properly they are an asset, collecting dust they are nothing. The Army spends a great deal of time developing its processes and they work. I would say that some type of book needs to be used. When I say used, I don't mean simply sitting on the desk out of date. When used, these books are extremely helpful. I will say though, some NCOs do not prefer them or can do their job just fine without them. But they are great tools when used correctly. I have always used a small green leader's book. It helps me to remember soldiers details. When it comes time to write an NCOER, counseling, or award I have the information ready. This new People First initiative is what we used to do. Now it looks like a check the block. Soldiers may act sensitive and cry about you checking on their vehicle, education, and housing situations, but in the end the 11% that make it to retirement will be better off if you take the initiative. Your not a nerd or a dork for using the books on your own. Keep studying, apply the book to everyday activity and you will become the smartest guy in the room without being the "walking regulation guy". You will not win good favor calling everyone out where you find yourself with a group of leaders who think they have it, if you are constantly spitting references or reg's at them. You have to in your position, have to hold yourself to a higher standard and you will eventually shine through. The unit, localized command you are in is powered by ego and this will eventually fail and change. Use your new found training to give you a base for how to conduct yourself and use your current command to learn valuable lessons at their expense. You will seesaw back and forth between commands that follow the much proven system and those who feel they are above the system. At the end of the day there is a 99% success rate using the wisdom of others failure that made the rules for success. Becoming a dynamic leader is understanding your base of support vs your who you are leading and implementing proven, successful method to every situation and not deviating but changing your delivery of method to the situation. Hope this helps you survive the grinding flop you are in.
