After seeing the tragic video of the death of Mr Floyd in my home city, I feel compelled to speak up. I recognize this is a can of worms but I am curious if I'm even allowed to as a soldier.
(If it is legal, and within regulation and I decide to participate) It should go without saying that I will uphold the army values and commit no crime.

If you wish to partake in the protests.....ENSURE that you do so legally and peacefully. And for the love of God DON'T wear your uniform.
That being said, why take the chance? We all have seen and know that a peaceful protest can turn riot within a few nanoseconds

Great points, Sergeant. Safety is a concern of mine, and a main the reasons I have not participated this far, especially as I'm slotted to deploy in the near future and I wouldn't want to jeopardize that. It's just that it's so different compared to when I've seen events like this happen across the country. This is so close to home...

SPC (Join to see) - There are ways to legally protest. Write to your city rep. Write to your state rep. Write to the paper. Hell, sit outside your house (in your yard) with signs demanding justice. But stay away from the crowds. One spark is all that is needed to turn a crowd into a destructive mob.

Yes you may, but do not affiliate yourself in any way as being a servicemember. No camelback, no camouflage backpack, no "go Army" t-shirt, and certainly no uniform items.
And a word of advice from a man that has been in the Army for a minute and lives right in the middle of the chaos in Minneapolis. Be aware of who you are associating with. There is more than one group out there on the street, and they don't have the same agenda. Exercise your First Amendment rights, but if you see illegal things going on, get the fuck away from it. If you find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time, it will have serious consequences.
As someone who lives here, right now Minneapolis is the wrong place to be.
Be smart, son. I appreciate your desire to speak out against injustice. And I am proud to have you stand with me.

Unfortunately the people who are legitimately protesting an obvious case of police brutality are being used by opportunists that simply want to commit crime. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the victim and all those who feel affected by it, but I don't get how burning down the local Target makes anything better.
Let me be clear; that man was murdered in cold blood and those police officers should be held accountable for their actions or lack of action.
I remember watching the glow in the sky coming from LA during the Rodney King riots. And after all of that devastation and destruction nothing changed other than local residents having to take a bus to get to a grocery store.
Violence and rioting do not bring about positive change.

When you need the best advice ask the First Sgt.. It comes from experience and wisdom 99% of the time. I considered my First Sgt. to be my best friend. When wrong, I felt I disappointed him and accepted the punishment. May not have liked it, but he had two things in mind: his people and the good of the Army. He had one thing that stuck with me, and I later used as I achieved rank. He asked if you screwed up or if it appeared you screwed up to inform him. His words "Let me know, don't let me be surprised and hear about it second hand".

As long as you are not under title-10 status and don't represent yourself as presenting a military opinion during the event. You need to also do legal and peaceful demonstration.
