Because 8 years ago, top brass got some common sense and let the army have the PC back. Black beret is worn for ceremony type stuff. Decided it was better for regular Army to be just that instead of trying to be like the smaller beret wearing types.

I may be the only one who didn't mind the beret. Its maybe the only piece of head gear I've seen you can't get away with wearing wrong or improperly. The PC is far more practical for sure, yet the beret needed to shaped and maintained instead of thrown on like a baseball cap or oversized.
I wear mine for our dine-out ceremonies or military funerals. That's about it.

SSG (Join to see) - Agree about the black beret. So impractical. Couldn't stand them. I'd find any reason possible to have my troops wear their PCs.

Much like the airborne tab, the maroon beret is unit designated. If you're in an Airborne unit you wear one unless mission dictates otherwise (in the field, at the range, on a jump). You actually don't have to be airborne qualified to wear one.
