There has been joking, especially as of late, regarding the legitimacy of some forms of study at universities. Personally, I believe that things live Sociology and Cultural Diversity courses are absolutely useless and, in fact, do nothing but allow for the perpetuation of assinine and unfounded beliefs (e.g. white privilege, systematic racism, diversity = better). Do you believe that there are areas of study that we would do well to rid ourselves of without hindering human development for the future?

SGT Joseph Gunderson while i see the negative effects of the byproducts you describe (was looking for my white privilege whilst burning crap in Iraq), these pursuits are elements of a free society, which as Veterans, we made possible.

For every kid specializing in women studies, I'm hoping what we have done has set conditions for one or two to go to a trade school. I'm hoping another goes to medical school and becomes a doctor. I am hoping for every one of these liberals babbling about micro aggression we have two or three understanding their civic duty and being good citizens.

This has been the best defense that I have been presented with and I can say that I may not entirely agree with you, but I do agree.

Good that people can agree to disagree without starting a protest

Cut down on the required non major related courses. For engineers eliminate a liberal arts class or 2 and add more math. For liberal arts types there is no reason an english major needs to take anything beyond a simple math 101 class. I loved grad school because it was just engineering classes.

MSgt (Join to see) the uselessness of a course is certainly relative to the degree.

I disagree with sociology being useless, that relates to everyday life, some of the drifting now from reality and having another ideas shoved down Your throat and not being able to think for Yourself, that I have a problem with. I see nothing wrong with learning about other cultures and ways of living either. I found some of the social experiments that I learned about that failed and why they failed while others may have succeeded. A well rounded education which the largest emphasis of course on Your major course of study. The whole Idea is a well rounded education to prepare You for Your future life and occupation.

Learning about other cultures and civilizations would primarily fall under anthropology though. In order to get a real idea for modern sociology, you may want to google a course description or two at your local universities. You may be unpleasantly surprised as to what they actually cover.

SGT Joseph Gunderson - I know there are universities that the course and force feeding indoctrination would disturb Me and Yes its in unpleasant, I'm glad I didn't attend a place like that. Is that a problem ?, Of course it is. Its the twisting of facts and information and lack of two way dialog that ruins things today. Things need to get back on target and many places they just aren't and with that independent thought stops. What and how some subjects are covered and if students can participate and have their own views or are spoon fed the views of others sure is a problem if its allowed to be.

SMSgt Lawrence McCarter - So, would it be your opinion that we shouldn't necessarily look at the curriculum being taught but the individuals teaching that curriculum to ensure that the political or ideological biases are removed from the process of education?

SGT Joseph Gunderson - i do know when i went to college I loved got in a course with one of the faculty members and the great discussions in class. The class was great, We learned a lot and He kept it interesting. There was never any bias shown there by any of the professors I had encountered. The instructor can make all the difference in the success or failure of any education. A course is only valid if the Instructor makes it so . The way I figure it in college, I was the paying customer and the Professor was the employee and if that's forgotten We have a problem. I'll respect their position but I expect the same in return.
