Yes, and we have been for some time now. This latest data breach was the most extensive that I am aware of, but there have been other attempts to hack the grid and China has shot down satellites - which would have a devastating effect in war time communications and navigation.

I would agree w/ Capt Seid Waddell. The only issue is that it does not appear that we are doing anything about it. It isn't reported except on certain channels (tv/radio). Since its nothing sensational, it isn't deemed worthy by the evening news.

Yes, and we are losing this badly.....the government needs to look at our best and brightest within the cyber community and hire some of these individuals that have such fantastic computer skills (hackers) and started "beating the crap" out of them. We also need to be far less concerned with offending these asshats and publish the who's and what's behind these attacks; similar to the manner in which we outed the Soviets whenever we detected/caught one of their intelligence assets during the Cold War.

The impression I get is that China is at war with us, and not just in the cyber world. We haven't decided that we need to be at war with China. I believe China has been at war with us since 1949ish, when the Nationalists lost to the Communists and boogied off to Taiwan. It's long past time for us to take the gloves off, but the "peace at any cost crowd" currently in charge refuse to do so. Previous administrations have ignored the problem as well. That's what happens when you get in hock up to your eyebrows...and who is holding the paper? Our enemy. How friggin' stupid is that?!

All major powers constantly jockey and angle and wrestle, normally this is done in the shadows, espionage, sabotage, economic games, and now cyber. Our power struggles with other powers always exist on a continual spectrum, rather than a binary at war or at peace.

After reading through some comments here I noticed that majority is leaning on the cyber war possibility, and while that may or may not be the case (as no government entity our or foreign would admit to such). There is also a quite real possibility that this is work of a hacker activist (hacktivist) entities. Most of these groups work on distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on government, religious, and corporate websites (such as Anonymous). But some of them are in the lucrative business of data mining and PII theft. They just choose to hit soft targets, and along the way plot deception techniques that avert the attention from themselves and point it to foreign governments of opposing political views.
