I have been on total disability since 2008 for pain and other issues from neck injuries I suffered on Active Duty. I have been looking for work recently, because I'm fed up with being retired at 55. I still hurt, a lot, but being sidelined hurts more.

Because I have a huge gap in my resume, coupled with impacts on my voice box from one of my surgeries, congregations don't want to hire me as their rabbi, because they expect the rabbi to be able to lead all the services (even though there is no requirement for this anywhere in Judaism).

Chaplaincy is very difficult for me because it's so physically demanding, and I've been denied positions there, as well.

I know the law about discrimination based on disability, religion etc., but that doesn't stop potential employers from passing on me. I'm not giving up yet, I still have options, but nonetheless, it's extremely frustrating and disappointing.

So, if you've been on total disability for some extended time, and gone back to work or tried to go back to work, what are your experiences?

LCDR Jaron Matlow, That is very unfortunate to hear especially for the reasoning on their side.

Have you tried to go through the Military? I believe they hire civilian these days. Just a thought.

I wish you all the best.

I have to first find jobs that are relevant to my skill set. The military doesn't hire civilian chaplains in most places so it's difficult, but I am watching their listings. If I find something good, I'll be sending in an application with the Schedule A for disabled veterans... Thanks.
