Are you surprised that the Army moved quickly to have Ranger School open to women?

The Army just announced that Ranger school will be open to "all qualified soldiers regardless of gender." Are you surprised by the speed of the policy change after 2 women graduated last week? Has there been enough time for the data to be appropriately evaluated? Why did officials put out a statement saying there would be another trial in November if they planned to open the school prior? Will the two women that graduated (or the third on her way to a tab) receive orders back to RTI to act as instructors? Further thoughts?

In my opinion this was already a foregone conclusion unless something awful happened during the first class with the female graduates, which it did not.

Sapper school has been allowing females to attend the course for several years without incident, so I'm not surprised by this change either... other than the fact that it hasn't happened sooner. The big shock to me here is how quickly the wheels of bureaucracy turned to make this happen. We all know how slow the military and the federal government can be.

We were told after the end of last class there would be another test class on Nov. Then we were told this about a week ago. So the decision was already made. What I want to know is have we put females through infantry a it yet? Ranger School is suppose to be an advanced infantry course so why are we starting here? Also good on people for cheering on the females but if you have a smart comment you better have a tab.

I am surprise that it took this long to realize that women are just as capable as we men are. It is unfortunate that despite the countless of years we have serving side by side with women dating back to Deborah Sampson AKA Robert Shurtliff that they were required to prove their worth in order to wear a badge. The only requirement in the Military in general should be "all qualified soldiers regardless of race, gender, and/or sexual orientation." If one can meet the standards, nothing else should matter.

Are you serious? They had the press release written months ago and were just waiting for a women to make it through the school. This was a going to happen regardless. No one in the Government cares about the military or our soldiers when it is a question of political correctness.

CPT Private RallyPoint Member - As we continue to beat this dead horse, I think it was a foregone conclusion. I have no issue with it, as long as the standards are not lowered to accommodate females. If a female can meet the standards for the course (and that is what it is, a military course), there is no good reason why she should not be able to attend. If she meets the standards, she should be able to graduate and earn the Tab.

Now that all the hype and hysteria is almost over, given that two females have successfully graduated and been awarded the Ranger Tab (and I certainly am not trying to denigrate that super accomplishment -- I am very proud of them for their outstanding accomplishment), people need to realize that these two females are certainly not representative of the vast majority of females who may want to try Ranger School. They were hand-picked and put through much more pre-course training and certification than their male counterparts and, then were followed and observed throughout the course to ensure they were not "disadvantaged" because of their sex. I totally believe that they met all requirements and earned the Tab, but, again, they are not representative of the majority of females in the Army. My concern is that, now that the "glass ceiling" is broken, the Army will be under tremendous pressure to have female Ranger graduates in every class, to preclude being accused of discrimination against women. To accomplish that, it would almost certainly require a reduction in standards for females (or for everyone,so females could graduate). While I hope that is not the case, I am a realist and am pretty positive that is what is going to occur.

PC social engineering, without regard to impact on the military. No news there... just par for the course.

My questions are related to this, but what about:
The female Observers/Advisors, is their mission complete?
Will Ranger School still have female Observers/Advisors for the time being?
Will/should those in female Observers/Advisors positions be required to attend and graduate Ranger School to continue in those positions?

I am surprised by this. It is not even about the women at all. It is how they went about this. First they were just going to do a trial. Then maybe another trial to get more info. But no, they just went ahead and went against everything they said. Why didn't they just say this. It is like politics. Look how long it took to get Multicams, the JLTV, or anything else the Army does. But know they just went ahead and changed the whole Army overnight? Smooth. Maybe we should just cut some more infantry units make everyone infantry so they all can go to Ranger School.

As long as they don't change the training to suit women I'm fine with it. I understand the want to be the best that I can be. Now if they start lowering the standards I will have a problem with that

There is no surprise, first look at what Ranger School is and next if three women can graduate why continue to say no. There comes a point in time when men have to accept facts, that women have the mettle to do some things just like men.

We tend to get wrapped around the axle over this stuff. Just open opportunities and let the pass/fail rate speak for itself. For heavy physical jobs, I'd expect fewer women. For multitasking prowess, I'd expect more. The trick is to ensure the criteria applied in testing actually relates to the required proficiencies. The goal is to provide opportunity to excel to all our citizens.
