Good advice on transition timeline planning. To all transitioning SM's don't forget to research the Post 9-11 benefit, getting paid to go to school is hard to argue with!

If you were injured including by disease while in military service especially in combat, ensure you have copies of your medical records [preferably paper and digitized]. I recommend contacting the VFW, DAV or one of the other veterans organizations and ask them to assist you submit a packet for disability rating/compensation to the Department of Veterans Affairs. When I left the military in 2008 the recommendation was to contact the VA [and begin your post military career search in earnest] 6 months out. Recently I saw that the recommendation was 1 year out.
