In the end, I think a lot of it depends on the unit needs, the MOS, whether or not you have to reclass, go back to school, etc. If this was taken care of, it was a lot easier. If not, it could be more difficult especially since funding is tight and units may not want to give up a qualified SM Response by LTC David S. If they need you the recruiter can request a conditional release from the AG for enlistment in the ARNG. Good luck! Talk to a recruiter and get their paperwork going to find out the specifics of what unit and job you're going to. Once that is drawn up they will create a DD Form 368 requesting release from your current unit, under the condition that you enlist into another military unit. Depending on the structure, this might be able to be signed by your commander, or it may have to go up to the battalion or state level. Once that is signed you're good to go and can start the new enlistment. Once you do that, it's a done deal. You'll just have to make sure you take care of any out-processing and equipment turn-in needs. Also, I assume this is easier if you're staying in the same state that has a lot of joint forces objectives. I switched states in the process which complicated things. The Air Guard allowed me to keep my rank and other benefits. Just make sure you stay polite and professional, and barring any upcoming deployments, etc, they should allow it. First thing to do is get into contact with the Air Guard Unit Recruiting office that you want to join- they can advise and help make it happen. If it is in the same state it is easier. If it is in a different state just a little bit more complicated and takes a little longer. Who within his unit is the best to get this started? Admin, CWO, ? He has spoken with the ANG and they have a need for him if he passes the PAST he is in for 1 AFSC and if he doesn't pass that he has two other options. I'm trying to go Air National Guard to Army national guard. You think it would be a pretty reasonable transition if you're unhappy in the current service and really have the desire to continue serving in another. But, according to people who have tried it comes down to whether leadership needs you or not. It was a long time ago, but I didn’t think it changed much. For the most part, you should be able to keep the same rank, depending on available slots. I didn’t need to repeat Basic Training, just needed to go to a Tech School (AIT) for the AFSC (MOS) that I was transferring to. It was a culture shock going through an Air Force School. I’m not 100% sure if you have to go through Tech School if you are transferring to the same job, like MP to Security Forces. No regrets though, just like anything, it is what you make of it. If you don’t like the job you’re in, look for another career. There’s always options and opportunities if you look for them. Good luck.
