There will be people who disagree with this assessment, but those are the people on the ground making the important decisions that accomplish missions and tasks. Your profile indicate you just made Staff. Career progression is great, but in the end memories are priceless. My best peace time military memories are from the days I spent as a howitzer section chief. Being an arty PSG was fun, but running a gun line was nothing like running a gun. I probably had a bigger impact on the Army overall as Smoke, but no where near as much fun.

Use your time as a Staff Sergeant to hone both your professional MOS skills and your leadership skills. Coach and mentor your Soldiers. Seek opportunities to mentor other Soldiers and leaders. Become a go-to person. Nothing better than asking an OC during lanes training a question they cannot find it a book. Become that person.

Last summer I had the opportunity to supervise a white cell for a large field artillery exercise. One day I decided to visit one of the motor pools of a unit I work with in the past hoping to run into some people I knew. I didn't, but I did have the chance to look over the Army's latest towed 155. I had never seen one up close and knew little about them so I was full of questions. I asked the young gunner some questions. Like I said I knew nothing about this particular weapon system, but I know artillery. He tried to blow smoke but my follow up questions in arty jargon blew the smoke back at him (he really should have paid attention as I was wearing the BDE's patch on my right arm that day). Before long one of the young Specialist saved him.

Nothing will improve your chances of promotion like being good at what you do and being smart about your job. People will notice your smarts and skills. People will take about you in front of senior NCOs and Officers. They will help spread the news you are a top notch person. That takes time. You don't get to play Carnegie Hall after playing the trombone for a week! Most Soldiers shy away from the MRT, EO, MFT and maybe battle staff because they don't want the extra duty. The truth is, these school are very important in the Big Army's eyes. Depending on whether you have completed your SSG duties for your MOS, try and take battle staff. for example, if you were an Infantryman and had over 24 months of squad leader time it looks good if you worked in operations. This shows the boards that you are versatile. Lastly, look at your career map, most are online at the HRC site. This will give you all the details for career progression for your MOS.
