ARNG - Do I need to tell my TL/Chain of Command that I'm getting a tattoo?

I know what the regulations are regarding what I can and cannot have, but do I need to clear it first or can I just go for it?

Go for it OR save your money. You don't get a lot of it as a PFC

Textbook answer i think you're supposed to, but over the years i showed up with an all new sleeve and nobody's mentioned to me that i needed prior clearance.

No, you don't need to clear it with your chain of command. However, if your tattoo is offensive they can force you to removed it at your own expense.

Basically, just avoid anything visible in a short sleeve uniform, that includes the PT Uniform. No face tats, nothing above the neck or below the elbows/knees. And obviously, avoid anything offensive like this chap.
