As a condtional release from the National Guard, what are my chances?

I am currently a 31B in the NH National Guard and within the next few months, I will hopefully be released to the Active Duty side. Talking with the Active side, I have been told that as a renlisted prior service, I will get the options of choosing my duty station, or attempting a reclass. How much truth is there in this? Also, i know it is a unicorn, but I am hoping to become a 31K at some point in my career. If there is not a spot open, would Fort Sam (home of Delta 701st, the 31K training unit) be the best option in attempting to enter the K9 program?

As a prior service from the Guard to Regular Army the priority is to keep you in the same MOS if posible; is a matter of resources ($). Also, K9 handler is an advanced skill the MP would send you based on it needs; a personal assumption. Regarding on duty station... that’s a conversation you’ll need to have when processing at MEPS.

When you speak to the recruiter at MEPS they with call the ROC and see what assignments that have available for your grade and MOS. Is usually 3 choices, sometimes less, sometimes more. You should get to choose from those options. Good luck and hopefully everything works out for you.

31K (Military Working Dog Handler) is an MOS now as of 2014. It is no longer an additional skill identifier of the 31Bs. D Co 701st is located at Lackland Air Force Base where the DOD dog training center is. Your chances of being stationed there are slim. If you wish to become a 31K you will have to re lass but must do it as a skill level 1, as of right now SGT and above can not re enlist to re class 31K. Hope the info helps.
